Could someone from Vodafone assist me with some queries RE business 5g connection? I just got off the phone with a Vodafone business sales rep and I would also like to pass on some feedback about the call.. Sadly it wasn't good and is likely costing you sign ups if what I was told [and what I suspect] is false.

Happy to take this to DM's for a phone follow up

Cheers!

@Linux - Yeah I could smell bs too, I was told that 5g would not be good for a backup connection and it’s not really good for anymore than 5 devices and is suited towards retail stores or dairies… and that tech support told them to tell customers that it’s only good for up to 10 devices so they [the sales team] understate that to 5 so they don’t upset customers by over promising..

There was a bit more to it as well, but was quite an off putting convo for someone trying to sign up and left me thinking I best double check things before committing. The agent was quite clearly non technical so maybe could do with a bit more training if they are the business end of presales conversation..

I personally can’t think of a better use for 5g as a backup connection..

Linux: 4G alone is awesome for backup connections

Until there is a big fibre outage and everyone is trying to use 4G in that local area.

But yes, in general, it is a good cost-effective backup, that will work well 99% of the time.

Hmmmm

Vodafone have been looking to dump their overseas call centre for some time and move calls back to NZ. It sounds like this call is definitely a good reason to do so.

Or the outage that takes out your primary connection also takes out the back haul for the cell site in which your mobile back up would connect to. I would think it would be just fine for a backup connection. 1 thing to keep in mind, test the fail over connection and make sure it works as expected.

We have (VF) 4G secondary WAN connections at our sites.

We understand if there is a major area-wide outage, the site will probably go down (primary at all bar one of our 15 sites is UFB) as a major fibre outage will probably take out a cell tower. We have the 4G in case of a local fibre outage (digger/car accident) or an ISP issue with fibre. We went UFB/4G instead of UFB/DSL as a local incident like a digger would likely take both fibre and DSL out.

So far, touch wood, it's been great. When a site fails over to 4G, staff and customers on site do not even know it's happened. Services just keep working (EFTPOS, Internet, Phones - Vodafone OneBusiness).

Depending where you are your 4modem could be connecting to multiple towers, with some of those towers having microwave backhaul too. If your site is super rural then indeed you could be in trouble. Then again some issues are more localised to the last mile.

Was a very odd and confusing phone call

4g backup has always been my go to solution as well when a diverse fibre path isn't an option.. I haven't done anything with 5g yet and I thought I had a good understanding of it but the convo left me second guessing myself, the agent tried to save the sign up by saying if I still wanted to sign up there's a 30 day cancellation period but who wants to go through that hassle.

Spark coverage map doesn't show 5g in my location but I have 5g on my phone now.. In preparation for this solution i've had conduit run from the server room to the roof for an external antenna to be added once all up and running so just waiting on a call back from Spark now to see what options I have

Vodafone coverage map shows very dark red in our location so it's a bit of a shame how the initial engagement went with them.. so not looking forward to calling them back if Spark can't support us :/
