What new rort is this? This evening I received a text message on my Vodafone 'phone which said explicitly "unidentified sender" (specifically I coud not find any originating 'phone number.) The message contained what appeared to be advertising. I say "new rort" because in the previous several years of having Vodafone mobile numbers, I have never before received a text message which had NO originating number viewable,

Why is Vodafone forwarding such text messages? I do not want to receive UCE via Vodafone text messages, especially from parties I cannot identify.

Is there anything practical to be done to stop this abuse of my 'phone service? Note, the message arrived after Vodafone's 777 customer service closed for the night.

The message would not be a SMS and not sent by Vodafone but delivered over the Vodafone network,

Google WAP push messages and this will answer your question.

Disable WAP push messages in your handset WAP browser the link below goes a bit more into it

I make use of this program on my mobile, its called fishtext, http://www.fishtext.com/ For 5 pounds you get enough credit for thousands of txt messages to any mobile in the world. It uses 3g/GPRS and it allows you to switch off your mobile number so the receiver has no idea where the txt came from. There are many programs like this and unfortuanitly there is not much you can do to stop such messages. However Vodafone should be able to block txt messages to your number from unidentified senders, maybe you should give them a call. Somehow I don't think switching off the WAP push messages is going to work, because I am even able to send to older mobiles, those that don't e en support WAP.
