Is there any use for the old retired SureSignals?

Unfortunately not, which is a real shame.  Wifi calling doesn't work well for me as I'm on the cusp of poor cell reception.  I'm rather hoping that OneNZ might reintroduce it but I'm not holding my breath.

Typically VoWIFI should still function even with perfect reception, Do you mean VoLTE?

Yes - I have just enough cell strength for VoLTE and end up with poor voice quality even though I have a strong wifi signal available.  It would be nice to have some control over when wifi calling predominates - haven't found the IOS setting for that yet

Yeah, have found Android often has a 'prefer' option, but no such setting for iOS. It possibly hangs on to the mobile signal longer than it ought to.

I have my iPhone set to go to Airplane mode when it connects to our wifi at home, that way it can't try searching and connecting to the very poor cell signal where we are.

I then have it set to turn Airplane mode off when I plug the phone into the car and CarPlay kicks in.

It's done using the Shortcuts app.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Off topic... But I love using Apple Shortcuts, especially when combined with CarPlay.

My favourite

When connected to CarPlay:

  • Disable Bluetooth and Wifi as not needed and disabling Bluetooth means I don't get distracted with notifications on my watch while driving.
  • If it is a weekday and before 9am, open Apple maps and navigate to my work address
  • It it is a weekday and after 4pm, open Apple maps and navigate to my home address
  • If it is a Sunday and before 8am, open Apple maps and navigate to the golf course!

When disconnected from CarPlay

  • Turn Bluetooth and Wifi back on

... this probably should have its own thread, but... OMG! I never knew about this. Thanks for posting. Here's the Apple page FYI

Multiple threads outlining that one/vf order is cell-volte-wifi and flightmode is the only way to change that if there is an inkling of tower signal, and they have no intention to change default order.

Got one sitting beside my desk, wondering what to do with it before it put it into e-waste. Should probably permanently disable it first.

Whilst you are free to open them up, I would strongly caution trying to 'get something on it':

A. These are just one part of the network infrastructure. Just the basic functionality is dependent is dependent on special servers which are no longer running.
B. Even if you got the technology, big bits of the network would need to be replicated eg. SMSC, voice services.
C. Lastly and most importantly: these work on licensed bands... you don't want to play on these without permission.
