One has sent an e-mail out indicating the price rising to $10/day, but adding on 65 new countries as part of this.

Can see Travel eSims now getting more price effective and handy One allows WiFi calling from overseas as well as working over a mobile data connection.

The cynic in me questions how long until they decide to geo-block wifi calling like Spark do, if they keep increasing the daily rate like they have been I can only see more people using a local e-sim + wifi calling to avoid roaming costs.

Can you just VPN back home and have the wifi calling go thru that? The other option is to just not use it. Being accessible to others on a PSTN number is becoming less and less relevant and IMO pricing roaming how they do just accelerates the demise of it. If we can ween businesses off using it as a required field to sign up and a preferred means of contact then it might just go away.

you can VPN to bypass Spark’s block, but this needs to be done via an external router, not just by using the VPN setting on the phone. I experimented with this on a long trip overseas last year but it was more hassle than it was worth

eSIM + a VoIP number has been my go-to for years.

Just do a **21*NUMBER# call forward before I go and turn the SIM off. Easy as.

When is this taking effect? I never received an e-mail and one of my boys is roaming overseas at the moment.

Meanwhile more eSIM providers are popping up focused on travellers. The younger generation are moving onto this while travelling, I guess no different to buying a local sim back in the day.

It’s very interesting watching NZ telcos drive this market space else where, similar to NZ banks vs Wise for travel. Corporate and older generation can only support them so long. When did I last pay my NZ provider for roaming? I can’t remember.

Will this forward SMSs as well? And if it does, is there any lag? Any voip provider you would recommend?

It will forward Voice calls only as carriers will not allow SMS forwarding

Good to see them finally add UAE as I thought that was a strange omission (especially given 2degrees includes UAE) but a shame they're doing a price increase at the same time.

Good to see New Caledonia on the list also, thought that was a bit odd given how close it is to NZ and AU that it was on the top tier cost wise for roaming. Was there recently on a cruise and just relied on the free WiFi at the old cruise terminal.

Damn. That’s ridiculous. $280 for 28 days roaming vs Spark’s $60 for the same period. Whilst One may offer you more data, it’s easy enough to get a local e-sim and use that for data whisk having the Spark sim handle calls/texts.

To be fair the sole New Caledonian telco (Mobilis) is run by the local postal monopoly (OPT - Office for Post and Telephone). I went a few years back and One/Spark had no roaming at all and 2deg had voice/SMS roaming only. To get a local SIM I had to visit a post shop.

Even now 2deg has no data roaming in NCL. Spark apparently has 4G data roaming there now.

I suspect the issue was on their end rather than a lack of interest from our telcos.
