I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where people can discuss any calling issues they’ve been having since the 2G/3G shutdown.

For example, the other day on my iPhone XS Max I tried calling someone and it just sat on “Calling…” with complete silence — no ringing tone, nothing — and it never progressed to a connected call. I hung up and tried again with the same result. I then tried toggling Airplane Mode on/off, but it still wouldn’t work.

I tried calling a different person and got the same issue, so I ended up using Viber to make the call instead (although Wi-Fi Calling probably would have worked too).

Interestingly, after the Viber call finished, normal calling started working again.

I’ve also noticed that sometimes when calling someone there’s no ringing sound at all — just silence — and then suddenly the person answers and the call proceeds normally.

About a month ago I also received a “Who Called” text saying I had missed a call, even though my phone was on the whole time and never rang. When I called the person back, they said it did ring from their end.

Is anyone else experiencing strange calling behaviour now that the network is relying entirely on VoLTE/IMS?

It’s been around two months since the shutdown, so I’m surprised some of these issues still seem to be happening.

For context, all of these issues occurred on the cellular network with Wi-Fi disabled, so this was standard VoLTE calling rather than Wi-Fi Calling. My signal strength in my area is generally good.

I’m also interested in gathering other users’ experiences before potentially logging a fault with One NZ, to help determine whether this is a broader network/IMS issue or something localised.

@CtrlAltKiwi You mean along with the other 300 threads? :P

not 100% of incoming calls will connect and it is impossible so the odd incoming call will reach VM and not page the handset

The no ringing sound and then someone answers I've had a few times. Pretty sure each time it has happened my S23 FE was using Wi-Fi calling. Also was happening before 3G shut down.

I've always had the odd instances where my phone has not rung, but I get a missed call notification. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year. But again, this was happening before the 3G shut down.

Perhaps you could try Resetting Networking Settings in iOS? Recently I fixed an unrelated network issue whereby I had no data to my 17 pro max. It apparently resets the modem and fixed that issue. Perhaps it could fix your calling issues?

I've recently done a full factory reset on my phone setup as new (not restoring from backup) and the issue persists. Also running the latest IOS available to my device. Glad to know it's not a Modem issue with my phone.

@CtrlAltKiwi " Also running the latest IOS available to my device " what do you mean by this and how old is your handset?

I have not had any of these VoLTE calling issues with my 17 Pro Max. Nor with my 15 Pro Max which I had since the launch in 23 or with a 6s before that in the mists of time. All were NZ models, but I'm not implying it is a frequency compatibility issue.

Perhaps you have a hardware fault?

I do not use calling much, but on my xiaomi phone that I had to enable with the code, I get a weird beeping noise when making outgoing calls now they have taken the obnoxious warning message away. Still goes thru but it sounds more like a busy signal instead of a normal outgoing call ringback. I am assuming that a legit phone with operator profiles on it would have the calling tones specified as well.

Could the weird beeping noise be that there is a voicemail waiting for you to check?
