Are these results any good. Using Xnet Fusion. Test was done on Vodafone website.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 2680 kbps (335 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 783 kbps (97.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 65 ms

I'm thinking about dumping Xnet and getting Vodafone Home Phone Wireless.

Getting sick of rebooting xnet mdem 3 to 4 times a night.

Would I get these speeds via 3G in Northwood Christchurch.

Thanks.

Use this tool to look up your address:

http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

Are you close to the exchange or a cabinet?

Check the ADSL sync speed in your modem's admin UI to see what speed you're connected to the exchange or cabinet at, this depends on line quality, house wiring and distance from the exchange/cabinet.

What modem do you have anyway? Lots of older modems/routers had flaws where lots of connections (bittorrent would overload the routing tables. You could update the firmware or change to a better router/modem.

Wireless is typically inferior to ADSL in terms of performance, latency and price for a home internet connection.  I would look at Telecom, Telstra, Maxnet or Snap ADSL if I was you.

Your performance is what I would expect from rural lines. Everything is good except the download speed (which would be classified as acceptable). But if you are near the exchange then I would say it is poor.

I've got to reboot only once every few weeks (on Fusion), and that is because of my cheap modem. You should not have to do it more than once a week. Do you perhaps have a Sky box that is still plugged into a phone socket but without a filter? Or maybe your modem is on it's last legs.

I did notice that yesterday around 5:00 my PPP light was off (which is possibly a reboot of the XNet server) and I had to reboot my modem. But otherwise I only reboot the modem when the modem locks up (and I can't get into it's status page).

Rural lines in Belfast ?? Northwood is a subdivision that is only 8 yrs old and I'm very near to a cabinet, less than a Km I believe. Both my modem and wirless router are 8 months old. Lynksys AG 310 and a Belkin wireless G. I just need to figure out if I will go with Telecom Total Home or Vodafone Ideal Pack.
Decided against Vodafone Home Phone Wireless and 3G Vodem.

I have lived in Northwood for ~ 6 years. I am sure that early on, fiber was run from the Belfast exchange to the cabinet.

There is a reasonable variation in download speed over the course of the day.

Are there any other ISPs who share this cabinet?

I have had to reboot my modem several times but this is not a common occurrence.

Since you are on Fusion, send XNet a help desk e-mail and describe the problem. They will give you priority, being dependant on the phone service. (They are probably already looking at it, as they do still read GZ even though they seldom post here lately.)

Is this really a Telecom contention problem?

Perhaps the uptake of broadband has been underestimated.

For instance there are at least 3 wireless networks around us and I have seen up to 5.

My download speed is typically 2K6 but can slow to ~ 1K or speed up to 5k (this morning @ 5.50 am.)
