I was on the kiwibank visa debit website here:

http://www.kiwibank.co.nz/visa-debit-card/faq.asp

And on the question of "why do some services that accept visa not accept visa debit cards?" it says vodafone live may not accept visa debit cards.

Anyone confirm if vodafone live accepts visa debit cards?

Most new zealand banks offer debit cards now(asb, westpac, kiwibank etc) partly because of the recession is meaning debit cards are more popular than credit cards because the money is deducted from your bank account so you don't pay interest, so i'm guessing alot of over 18 year olds would be getting these now, so you'd hope vodafone accepts visa debit cards to verify a person's age for the r18 vodafone live services. If they don't, then they should. Just do what adult websites do, have a disclaimer saying "you confirm your 18 or older, continue or exit".

Alittle off topic, but some hotels and car rental places also won't accept Visa Debt cards (and I'm speaking from experience).

Well, the FAQ you posted answers the question itself:

Some services, for example Vodafone Live, use credit cards to verify the customer's details, such as their age. Because a Visa Debit Card can be issued to people aged 15 and over, some of these services may choose not to accept it.
(emphasis mine)

As for credit vs. debit - use a credit card sensibly and you don't pay interest.  I live off entirely mine; and wouldn't want to replace it with a debit card!

No, banks are pushing debit cards since they then lose the cost of having to provide the interest free period and still manage to collect the same from the merchants.

All while convincing people that risking their own money to the insecure credit card system is better then using the banks stuff for free. Your a tard if you take a debit card when you can get a real credit card.

It's worth remembering also that most credit card billing systems (and terminals) handle "regular" and "prepaid" credit cards (this includes the debit style cards) differently.

This is due to the potential fraud issues wth cards such as the Prezzy cards if they are used by a terminal in offline mode. Since the money isn't able to be billed to a card if there is no balance the vendor can find themselves out of pocket. Most of the taxi's here in NZ don't use realtime processing for credit cards, only for EFTPOS, so you'll find that cards won't work in all these terminals either.

This is amusing.

They have their place I think, but I don't see the point of them.

They do serve the purpose; particularly for those who aren't eligible for a credit card due to age; or fail the credit requirements; or for those who just can't control themselves to spend within their means.  The other somewhat useful applications for them are for businesses (business credit cards can be very irritating to get); or for offshore based people who can't qualify for local credit cards but need a bank account (very common in the US).

I am not sure about sbiddle's comments regarding some machines not accepting them - perhaps specifically for Prezzy card prefixes; but in general how can a machine identify a debit vs. credit card?  While I don't use my (non-NZ) debit card very often, it does work in taxis and other offline PoS terminals - as does a coworker's US debit card.
