Well I've had enough crap internet for a life time with Xnet, I refuse to support them with my hard earned $$ for the rubbish bandwidth they supply.

I'm on fusion atm and would like to know if I can somehow move my same phone number back to Telecom from voip? (it was a Telecom number before fusion)

Has anyone done this already ? I guess just get the phone (pots) and then order up adsl etc but I'm not sure about the number?

Cheers,
Mort

I haven't actually done it, but I believe the procedure would be:

1) Get your phoneline reconnected as POTS with any random number they allocate to you.
2) Your broadband will most likely be disconnected at this point.
3) Get broadband added to your line.
4) Port your VFX number back to Telecom.

All of this assumes that you haven't moved house in the period since porting your Telecom number to Fusion. In that case, it may not be possible.

Have you considered getting your number ported to 2talk? They have pre-paid voip accounts, and if you ask them nicely, you can go on their free plan, and pay an extra $7/month to keep your old landline on it.

We moved to Orcon last November.

Had no problems moving off Fusion, and haven't looked back since.

yes, done that last week,   simply phoned telecom and ordered their Total home package, Telecom had me changed over within 4 days, and got my original telecom phone number back. No spam, no email problems and very good speed 24/7

Yes I did that a couple of months ago.
I just phoned Telecom and they organised the lot. Only took 2 business days to move, and I kept my VOIP phone number too.

And WOW what a difference in broadband speed, I can't believe I stayed with XNET for so long, hoping they'd get their act together!

Woot! -Just got off the phone to Telecom and it was surprisingly easy! I just had to wait on hold for ages while they do 'stuff' but that's ok.

Just incase anyone else is reading this, it will pay to call Xnet first and ask for your account number and ASID number which is like a hardware number for your phone line.

I'll update with how long it takes etc..

Thanks for your help & comments :)

Cheers,
Mort

You should try and time it for the end of your billing cycle, as Xnet will charge you up until that date regardless of when you terminate your service.

Sign up with your new provider and wait for the date advised. Ours took 6 days.

On the day, re-configure your router to your new ISP's settings.

Once you're online with your new provider ring your old provider to make sure they've closed your account and sent your final account. xnet didn't close ours automatically even though we had no services with them anymore.

nb... As Anatoki mentioned I would try to aim for at least 10 days before your billing date, as most providers will bill to the end of the month.

brdivu - can you expland on what the actual broadband speed improvement was. Whenever I do the speed test (as an existing Fusion customer), I am seeing 7.5mb/s from the Auckland server, much less from overseas of course. Is it the lack of International bandwidth that drove you to another provider?  If so, what are you seeing now compared to the Fusion plan.

Cheers Mike

national bandwidth was always acceptable, but the international bandwidth was appauling. At peak times, the downstream bandwidth was almost always around 200-300 kbit/s which was not even fast enough to stream simple youtube video (and certainly not HD).

As soon as I switched to xtra, my international bandwidth was typically over 8mbit/s even at peak times. and sometimes more like 14mbit/s. And I've never seen it any lower than 5mbit/s to the US, ever.

Crikey - that is an improvement. I know that I cannot watch a you tube video at any time without it pausing to catch up. Ok thanks appreciate that feedback

Cheers Mike

Ok here is an update it took ~2 of working days to get the phone back to pots and ~7 working days after that to get adsl active on the line. All happened really painlessly which suprised me..

I get about 8Mb/s national with varying international but I can now stream youtube videos and they come in over ~2.5x as fast as the speed needed to view them .. Woohoo!

Cheers,
Mort

I rang telecom yesterday and they reckon it will all be done by monday. Bye bye xnet it was good during the honeymoon period and I will miss the helpdesk's technical nature. Now lets hope telecom are talking with MS about VoD to the xbox 360 and not counting against broadband count.
