Oh no!... I just bought into Vodafone's deal on the half price Nokia 5800 on 24-month contract. Was hoping to unlock it and use a Telecom sim with it but have just realilsed that it is probably the
5800-1 which is a 900/2100 will only work on Vodafone
.  I looked at sooooooo many phones online today that I must have frazzled what little brain I have to have done something like this! GROAN....

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Vodafone because in general they have better coverage in Northland. I have a prepaid phone with Vodafone that works perfectly everywhere I go (for basic voice and txt) - everywhere that is, except at home where I barely get a signal so lots of missed calls, etc. There is a Telecom repeater right opposite our place which gives 100% signal here - don't know whether that has anything to do with the XT network though - was hoping to find out next week.

Man... I'll just go hang myself... Cry

Hey just found out about Vodafone's 3G Extended network which I didn't even know about. I've always ignored 3G stuff because I thought it was only for major cities and I live in a (very) rual area. And our place is covered by this new network... woohoo!  Please excuse my ignorance (wouldn't pass the IQ test mentioned in other threads, hehe), but is 3G only for data or is it for voice also?  Googling just talks about data, data, data.

Now I can't wait for this phone to arrive, it might work at home after all. Glad I couldn't find a suitable rope... maybe... And glad I haven't yet told the hubby what I've done... maybe...

Answering myself again... yes there is voice over 3G! Great, looking forward to the Nokia 5800 then.

Yes, it's voice and data. It's a completely differnet network from 2G, so even if you don't have 2G coverage, with the new Vodafone 900MHz (a.k.a. "Extended") you might find you have service for both.

So at the end, buying the phone wasn't that bad... Unless you still want to swap providers (which doesn't seem what you need to do now).

Yea, I also didn't realise there was a -1 and -2 of this model, which only allowed 1 freq range or the other.
Still, its a very nice phone (doesn't compare to the iPhone which a friend of mine just purchased). Maybe next year for the iPhone for me. =)
