Hello all,

I do some contract development work for a courier company. Our application uses Vodafones network to upload/download data from barcode scanner equipped HHC's. And we periodically have trouble getting our data through over GPRS.

Is most cases the amount of data is small, eg, messages to pickup parcels, or upload of barcode labels etc. But in some cases we upgrade the software over the network, or upload log files from the HHC software for retrieval (between say 1-5 meg).

Typically this works reasonably smoothly, but some days are just bad (today for instance), and these bigger uploadsjust wont go through. The errors we see are exceptions from our .NET HHC application, they're all network type exceptions such as timeouts, gateway errors, socket errors, and today "System.Net.WebException: This protocol version is not supported". I don't believe the issues are related to signal strength (I log this, and there's lots of cases of problem with a strong signal).

When the courier company ask's Vodafone if there are problems with their network, the answer is "No, no reported problems". To me, it seems they're getting the brush off.

Surely there are other users of Vodafone, with lot's of devices regularly uploading/downloading data? Can any of you report similar problems?

What would be nice is some sort of means for network users to be able to report performance or faults collaboratively. If we could confirm we're not the only one experiencing problems on a given day it would strongly point to issues with the service provider, and they'd have to start sorting these problem's out.

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers

GPRS is rock solid under good radio conditions but slow

We have many corp connect customers that use GPRS modems around NZ and they are reporting no issues.

What APN do you use?

Also another issue some servers don't like High latency over 250ms and during peak times latency can go to about 800ms to 1sec

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. The APN we're using is www.vodafone.net.nz

We've just set Timer_MinBytesPerSecond to 0 in IIS config to see if this improves things (it was 50). Please let me know if there are other parameters you're aware of that can be tweaked to work better with IIS.

The problem is odd, because as I said, often it all seems to work well. The same HHC and software is running in Austrailia on Telstra's network with no known issues, although probably not using GPRS (the device also supports EVDO and EDGE).

Cheers,
Graham
