Evening folks,

Just wondered how routing for SMSes which come from an international source is handled with regards to number portablity.

I have noticed that several of Nokia's websites/services which require a confirmation code via SMS do not deliver to an 027 number ported to Vodafone, however they do deliver to an 021 number. No way to test if they arrived to an unported 027 number as we are all Vodafone right now in this house...

Cheers,

kirjava

Incoming SMS arrive at the SMSC for the original network (so, telecom for 027), and are then forwarded on to the appropriate provider's SMSC if it is a ported number.

The issue you're seeing with ->027->021 will quite possibly be related to the telecom SMSC not supporting 8bit encoding of messages off-net.

I'd be inclined to say porting probably breaks SMS where the foreign carrier is aware, because wouldn't the foreign carrier attempt to deliver the message directly to Vodafone or Telecom's SMSC, rather than being able to figure out where to send it?

Interesting question though, since porting (as far as I'm aware) just updates routes to point the number to another location...
