Last year I switched from Xtra to Xnet, fed up with Telecom's prices.  But after a year of slow international speeds (I only download podcasts, no heavy use) and often slow local speeds I'm going back to Xtra.

I can't fault the customer service at Xnet, and I'd prefer to support the smaller company where possible but Xnet need to get their act together in a big way on the speed front.

I've just tested the download speed now that I'm back on Xtra; 12Mbps in NZ, 7Mbps+ to the LA server.  Being ADSL2+ helps as well I guess.

Even Geekzone loads quickly once again!

So Bye Bye Xnet, let me know when you've got your speed issue sorted, and I'll be back.

These are my speeds as of 16.45 today from Chch

To Los Angeles

To Auckland

I could not be happier with Xtra, and on the explorer plan 10Gb on ADSL2+ FLS up and down costs the same as the equivalent plan on Xnet, except of course that Xtra will be $75 cheaper this year (because of their offer) AND it actually works properly.

Ha ha!

Xnet have had that chronic performance problem for over a year.  One has to assume they don't have the money to invest in the proper gear to cache p2p (eg: PeerApp etc) and to manage network usage (eg: NetEnforcer etc) or buy enough bandwidth for regular residential web users.

Which raises the question... why haven't they increased their $/GB to like $1.50 or $2?

If they raise their prices they lose revenue; they are in the classic Catch 22 position...

No, they GAIN revenue, but only IF they manage to keep the same number of customers, or more correctly, process the same amount of data. Raising prices doesn't automatically equate to the situation I think you're referring to which is: the catch 22 of  if they DON'T speed up, then they'll lose customers and hence data throughput and THEN revenue.

Anyway, as none of us actually work at Xnet or a privvy to their books and / or strategic oversight, this is but fun speculation :)

Indeed! But I think that whereas Xnet *were* cmpetitive with their pricing, they are now being challenged by companies that offer the service as well, the net effect must surely be a loss of revenue since people like me, and others, will leave and I can't really imagine that anyone doing their homework will trouble themselves with Xnet; Telecom are now doing 20Gb for $49.95 until the end of the year, which is cheaper than Xnet.

Just change to the standard plan $1 per GB from Torrent, the speed after 2am is over 500KB/s(so that mean apart from Torrent, Xnet's speed on other plans are excellent) while on the torrent plan was just from 20KB/s to 60KB/s after 2am.I'm leaving Xnet now, everything will be changed over next Monday.I just wanna say that I'm loving Xnet since the day I signed up but now I have to leave.Hope all the best for you in the future!!
