Hi All,

Just looking at purchasing a PDA phone to replace my old N95 (on the vodafone network) and want to switch up to something that can take advantage of the Vodafones new extended 3g Network.

I don't really understand why or how the extended 3G network is different from the 3G coverage I get when in a major centre.

I am looking at the new HTC Touch Pro or HTC Touch Pro 2 but want to make sure it will work on extended 3G (just unveiled in Ashburton where I live!).

900mhz WCDMA / HSDPA / HSPA = extended 3G

Extending John's reply... Vodafone uses two different "flavours" of 3G. One (used in the main centres and in place for some time now) is on 2100 MHz band. The new "extended" uses 900 MHz band.

You need a handset that works on 900/2100 MHz WCDMA to take advantage of coverage everywhere.

When buying a handset don't look at "900 MHz GSM" because this the 2G network and very different of "900 MHz WCDMA".

Most new phones should support this. Older phones don't. The iPhone don't.

Hi John,

Thanks for that. I have checked the specs on the touch pro and they say

HSPA/WCDMA: *
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
*
Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:

*
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

(Band frequency and data speed are operator dependent.)

Guess this means that it WILL work on Extended 3G

It's perfect. No faults. Battery goes for couple of days even when I am abusing it with 24/7 3G data (push e-mail, facbook updates, MSN messenger and Weather updates). Have loaded it with TomTom and loads of other helpful software. Use Remote Desktop on it quite often.

Cannot comment on Exchange support. I know it supports it. Have tried confrence call and it worked as advertised. All parties including me were able to hear each other fine.

Do whatever you want to do man.

very tempted now.. its just come down a couple of hundred in price too which is another bonus.. maybe next month =D
