Over the past two days I've been disconnecting from the internet every 15-30 minutes. Sometimes when browsing webpages I will get the "Connection has timed out" error after the webpage has been trying to load for 15 seconds. This lasts around 3 minutes, after which my internet goes back to normal.

On Xnet.co.nz it says that xnet is not experiencing any network issuses.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

What could be the cause of the problem?

Most likely some kind of fault between your end and the exchange:
- faulty / bad wiring in home
- filter not plugged in somewhere
- a line fault between you and exchange
- a faulty modem
- a monitored alarm without master filter (or non-monitored alarm that is still connected to line)

First do an isolation test:
1. unplug all phones, faxes, sky, modem, filters & anything else from all your jack points
2. plug only your modem back in without a filter (NB: you may need to swap ph leads so you are not plugging in via filter)
3. test for a while and see if problem persists

Log a fault with Xnet if the above does not fix issue.
Start process of elimination if above does fix your issue.

I am also getting disconnected, but only in the evening. Between 2am-8am i didn't have a single disconnection

I noticed the same thing last night from around 6pm to 11pm .... I happened to have the dynalink status page open and every 15mins or so, it'd do from connected to ready to connect to connected. (took about 20-30 secs everytime it did this).

Great. My disconnections are back again.

UPDATE: I think I have tracked my disconnects to..........wait for it................AN EXTERNAL HDD!!!!

Good. There are so many factors involved. Manufacturers send one sample of their products to get EMC/RFI/ESD tested and then the manufacturer declares that all his products are manufactured the way the one sample was made. Been there, done that, the sample is tuned to pass testing. And passing by 0.1dB is still a pass. Then manufacturing variance come in to play, design changes, cost reduction, alternative component suppliers, or as in the 90's a major capacitor manufacturer stuffs up and motherboards fail within a couple of years (Intel acknowledged it, Dell did not). Interconnect products from different manufacturers which was not tested together and you don't know what will happen.

There is a chance your modem is packing up and the hard drive added just enough noise to cause it to trip out. EMC/FRI/ESD compliance testing is done on one new sample, not with aged components.

Funny thing is, the external HDD is about 8 metres away from the modem (including a wall between them), BUT the HDD is only 20cm away from the phone cable/

One of our products failed EMC testing. The culprit is a stainless steel tube about 20cm long. The length of the tube resonates at the frequency we fail.

The University of Stellenbosch in South Africa (with world class engineering faculty) built an RF shielded room. After a number of year of testing products for emissions, a lecturer decided to test his portable TV. Problem is, inside the room reception was better than outside! The hole where power cables entered the room resonated at the frequency of a local TV transmitter. A $2 ferrite core on the cables solved the problem.

RF is very interesting, can also be very baffling. Please let us know if/when it is solved.

Yes, i have the same problem.

it is soo frustrating.

do i need a new Router perhaps?

there are 7 flatmates, however they are all home at different times, 3 floors, what would you suggest i get?

i have a D-Link, and a linksys which judging from the forums are absolutly crap.

Also....

...My VoIP continues to disconnect durring a call, Internet continues to disconnect at least once a day...

Well there are many variables that contribute to disconnections. I had a thread which I started a couple days ago with the same thing on Orcon - turns out the crap D-Link modem (502T) I was using seemed to be the cause. As an example, yesterday I had 38 disconnections (this had been going on for almost two weeks but yesterday was the final straw) so it was suggested I use a different router. I bought a Dynalink RTA1320 modem brand new from Trade Me for $30 and in the 24 hours I've had it connected so far guess how many disconnections I've had? Zero.

Might be worth a try if you can pick one up - get a modem or router that is non-Texas based.

If you want a Billion 7100, you can have mine. Surplus to requirements.

Texas Instruments is a semiconductor manufacturer. They actually make very good components, but makes it hard to implement so only works well on expensive products. Reviews should tell you which manufacturer's chipset is used in a modem.
