am I alone in having major connectivity issues with my Telstra cable connetion in the Kapiti area in the last month? Its now the norm for my connection to lose ping to Telstra's gateway for 5-10 seconds every 5-15 minutes. This has the effect of killing my rdp/vpn to work by day and by night I get frozen games or get completely booted off 2 or 3 times each online match on xbox live.

Telstra inititially denied any issue but after I proved I still have the problem with 1 pc connected to the surfboard modem now they say maybe it is their problem after all.

Does anyone have any suggestions of vendors that pride themselves on service reliability?? With no ETA for a fix I'm looking for other options.

Hi Rick, I am obviously aware that the cable network and Telstras PDQ (ADSL on Telecom wholesale) service are quite different, but once back past the handover point I guess they all meet the same BRAS.

Reason I say this is that the guys on Telstra PDQ in Wellington district have been bleating on the GP Forums about exactly these types of issues.

http://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/359368/?s=

As for other providers, if you move from HFC to ADSL there are dozens for providers to choose from although all using Telecoms exchanges, as for speed, I presume you are in Waikanae, which is not due to upgrading to ISAM (and ADSL2+) till 2011, however you will still get the usual ADSL1 connection rates based on your line lengths which I imagine in your case is around 1.5km so you should expect full ADSL 7-8Mb/s down and 800-1Mb/s up, you will suffer a ping increase compared to TCL but if you choose the right plan you can get interleave turned off which will fix that.

Cheers
Cyril

thanks for that comment & link. Now I know I'm not alone I feel vindicated somewhat...the profile if my problem is indentical to that reported in the other thread...started from about July 3rd. regular random line drops all day and night for 5-30 seconds with Telstra denying there was any problem until after I rang several times they say there is a 'known problem in my area' but no ETA to fix. It was so bad last night I just gave up gaming altogether.

I am in Karori on cable and have experienced the exact same problem. It only started in the last couple of weeks - symptoms are VPN/RDP connections dropping out every 5-10 minutes.
TCL suggested my receive signal power level was low, so we disconnected some outlets not in use and replaced the cable modem to bring the level back within spec- no change. Direct connect of PC to cable modem also shows no difference in behaviour.

Something has changed - since TCL's ARP fix around this time last year my connection had been rock solid and now it is worse than the bad old days prior to the ARP fix.

Its looking like my problem has gone away as of Thursday afternoon sometime. Maybe my big phone rant at the helpdesk on Thursday helped?

My connection has started having frequent short dropouts recently - may be related to recent TCL work in the Berhampore area.

I had major issues last year and installed a Checkpoint Zonealarm firewall/router that appeared to resolve the issue. My partner has just called TCL and they see no problems on their side of the wire - same as last year really.

May be time to move on after 10+ years with them.
