Hi All,

I have a Nokia E51. It is not Vodafone branded but comes up with a Vodafone logo on startup. I assume it is a Vodafone NZ phone as it does not have a camera. I purchased it off Trademe.

I have been using it without issue for a couple of months without issue on Vodafone with two different on account sim cards.

Suddenly a week ago it displayed the message Sim Card Registration Failed. This occurs with two different sim cards which work fine in other phones. I took it into Vodafone who told me it needed to be sent to Nokia.

Prior to sending it to Nokia I updated the firmware to the latest version and did a full reset. Same result.

Nokia have just returned the phone and they performed a nokia software firmware update (as I did) and a system test. They advised me to contact my service provider for the sim card registration issue (which I already did).

So, my question is: Could this be a sim card issue or is it a hardware issue? It seems really weird that the phone just seemed to sim lock itself a week ago.

Cheers, Matt.

Update / Solved (kind of): After several hours on the phone to both Vodafone and Nokia it turns out the handset was stolen / lost and had been blacklisted. For those of you who purchase second hand and you receive a Nokia with Sim Card Registration Failed it may be a blacklisted phone. It doesn't seem to be widely known around the traps as it took me a week of calling both Vodafone / Nokia / Brightpoint to come to the conclusion that it was blacklisted.

So, it was a good deal but not now! The trader I purchased off is still trading on trademe so I will await his reply to my email with interest!

Cheers, Matt.

Please let Trade Me know about this ASAP. This trader may be ripping off others.

He is still trading. I have written him a strongly worded email. I will see if he has a suitable explanation for the blacklisting of the phone (I doubt it though) and then will contact the police. Trademe's advice is to contact the police directly...

Very Dodgy!

Do you have to give the phone back?

I know you are not in the UK! The phone is off to the police tomorrow. I heard back from the trader. He said it must be a mistake. He then went on to say that he bought it off a notice board and the owners claimed they were going overseas.... I guess he will have to explain that to the police. We are the ones that lost the $300... Bummer...

Actually I am in the UK! needed more marmite.

Is there a way to check whether the IMEI number is registered as stolen?

Crickey! You are in the UK! The wife just confirmed it too! I never get told anything around here... Vodafone were only able to confirm that the IMEI is blacklisted which indicates stolen / lost. I assume the police will know more tomorrow. Will keep you posted. Cheers.

Is it a black E51? Mine was stolen last year.
