So, Mr Vodafone, when can we expect to be able to do the same in New Zealand???? I feel a beer coming on, a brand that starts with T.

Yes, I've used Skype on my old phone too... but it is the iPhone / Skype calling I would like to see as is about to happen in the US.

We neither support nor block VOIP functionality. It's up to the customer...

having said that - mobile does pose some challenges for real-time services, eg VOIP. Latency is an issue.

But hey, if you want to use your KB doing it, knock yourself out. It's all good.

cheers

Paul

Agreed.

I myself tried it a few times over the last couple of months - and even Beta tested for a company looking at VOIP solutions for cellphones.

Unfortunately, latency is a big factor, and since Vodafone don't support VOIP, there are no promises you will be able to have a conversation with someone easily without lag etc.

When you read how other networks perceive cellular data around the world it is refreshing to see comments like Paul's above. I assume that Telecom have a similar neutral view?

I've probably used upwards of 200 minutes over the past couple of months testing VoIP over 3G on Vodafone, both mobile and stationary.

Has it's pros and cons but certainly works..

Have ya had the chance to do more testing of VoIP on XT yet? Be interesting to see how it compares.

I find VoIP on Vodafone is probably about 90% there, and overall is a worthwhile complement.

I teethered my Motorola K3 with my laptop and while we drove into Tauranga, i made a Skype call for a few mintues and it worked perfectly, much clearer than any cell phone call could have been. Of course the latency would have been a tiny bit higher than a cellphone call, but i didn't notice the difference....

It was a call to another Skype user in NZ.... not that it would make any difference! Any major latency would be as a result of the mobile network, not due to the receiver of the call being overseas.

Well yes and no, it seems Skype connects via the shortest path possible.

For example, on my LAN, if I send a file between two people on my LAN, it goes at LAN speeds.

No. Haven't had a chance to do any more testing.

I've done Skype on both networks and found VF to be a bit better. XT had similar latency but the voice quality wasn't the greatest. Still very usable. I was using E71 on XT and N86 on VF, both were using Nimbuzz as the VOIP app.
