It was always my understanding that voda charged GPRS access charges for accessing Vodafones email service.

However in the last few days my p910 was checking emails... and according to the account access - the usage was free. Now I thought something was amiss as there are no other charges... so I rang up voda's 777.

Can't get a straight answer out of them. Some of them say it costs 20c to check, Others say GPRS charges apply, others say that GPRS charges don't apply to voda mail.

I was using the internet APN ( www.vodafone.net.nz ) to access the pop3/imap service, am an on account user, and using my phones built in email client (so no wapmail!).

Does anyone know what is real or not? Is it free to check the email? Does data charges apply? Does it charge to download/send messages?

It uses normal GPRS charges. In fact whenever you connect to any Vodafone GPRS APN (ie Internet, live.vodafone.com or www.vodafone.net.nz) you pay GPRS charges. Their billing system then has flags for traffic that is free such as browing Vodafone Live! which is how it can charge you for browing regular WAP pages but not charge for Live!

Having said that Vodafone have had several promotions lately where they have offered free email to email capable devices. I noticed my data usage was down (I use email in my T610 frequently just to check) and can only assume that they were classing all traffic that used a POP server as free.

I am assuming you are not of a GPRS plan?

Correct. I am on the casual 'plan' for GPRS.

I was only slightly aware of the free email to email capable devices promotion, but can't seem to find it on the promotion page on voda.

If its still running... would like to know more details.

Edit: I know that GPRS is charged for everyone but vlive... but was curious why I wasn't charged.

Found the 'free mail offer', but that expired January - so that can't be it. (Not on a Business plan either, MM on account)

My GPRS usage is showing in the billing but since I have a GPRS plan it shows as $0.00 anyway.

Slightly of topic I've just gone to use WAP and accidently clicked on the Live! button on my T610 and got a "something is wrong with the page you tried to load, please choose another link" error. WAP is working fine on my phone but even entering live.vodafone.com manually I get the same error. Can anybody access the Live! portal at the moment or have Vodafone screwed up something so it's inaccessible from a T610?

Just checked with somebody else and they have no trouble either.

Is there anyone with a T610 who can try? My WAP settings are unchanged and I can load other WAP sites fine, it's simply Live! that will not work. I never use it so it's no big deal but Vodafone must have changed something to be causing this error.

Use MYA on the vodafone.co.nz site and have a look at the data sessions and how much you were charged

I have. The rate is "GPRS Free AnyTime MB's" and the charges for that session is $0.00 .

According to the site I used 0kb. Which is wrong according to my phone, I spent around 7kb downloading headers from the inbox.

Well, if it doesn't cost anything to check the mail... I'd do it on a much more regular basis and probably send some from the handset to.

But no-one from the helpdesk has been able to give me a straight answer. The same person will say three different things! I assumed that I'd just pay standard data rates to access the mail.

I'm using On account MotorMouth with No/Casual GPRS plan, does that make any difference?

It obviously looks like Voda have more GPRS billing issues. When this last happened they billed everybody after a couple of months for all the data they thought was free!

The T610 and Z600 have virtually identical firmware so it's obvious somebody at Vodafone has broken Live! for SE phones. I wonder how long it will take them to fix it or if anybody actually cares? :-)
