Hi All,

A friend of mine told me the other day that his girlfriend is getting a free upgrade of her vodafone mobile because she is on a contract. I'm not sure if this is true or not because I have been on a Vodafone contract for a little over 2 years and I've never heard anything about it, and I cant find anything on the net about it either.

I'll be a little annoyed if it is true though. My Nokia Xpress 5700 (I think thats what it was) was nothing but a pain since I got it, and a couple of weeks ago it completely died and I had to replace it with a $60 phone from Parallel Imported until I can afford a Motorola Milestone.

Hard to believe... My wife and I have just moved from contract to prepay as there was no point forking out fixed contract fees.  I needed a new phone and have never been offered a new phone or a cheap upgrade.

Yeah it sounded pretty unbelievable to me, but I thought it could be one of those things that is offered but you never get told about just so too many people dont take advantage of it.

It may just be that that store she got it from does it for customer loyalty or something.

Vodafone have offered a free mobile on a Texter/Talker 60 or above plan for quite some time.

The phone on offer changes every few weeks or so, at the moment it's the Nokia 2730 with extended 3g. Anyone can get it if you sign onto a new 2 year contract.

I wouldn't expect to be given a free phone without signing onto a contract...... why would they do that? So you can grab the phone and leave to 2degrees?

I would expect this is what your friend was talking about when they said they got a free phone upgrade....  You can get it too if you want to commit for 2 years.

Umm cheaper costs, and handset subsidies? If your plan is big enough, they will also add free minutes / mobile data.

My uncle got a free 6121 for resigning a few weeks ago.. And unlimited on-net weekend calling.

I've never been offered a free phone from VF and I've been a customer for nearly 14 years now!

If I remember correctly;

When you sign onto a contract you sometimes have a choice of a subsidy or free minutes.

Someone I know went of contract and took up the subsidy and got a new phone - then they had the contract for several years and didn't buy a new phone.

I think I remember her saying that because she didn't use the subsidy for x amount of years, she then had xxx amount of dollars to put towards a new phone.

Though, I don't know the ins and outs of it all, so I'm not 100% sure.

But I have never heard of a free upgrade from Vodafone (for that matter, any company unless they're corporate, in which case they're pretty much paying for it anyway).

I'm not sure what deals they have for business users though... i know my uncle gets pretty much any phone he wants for free but then his company spends thousnads of dollars a month wth Vodafone.

And therein lies the truth of the matter - a small personal user (sub-$1000 per month) is of little individual value, so therefore not really worthy of a fully-subsidised handset oe whatever, unless in conjunction with locking in your account to a long(ish) term contract.

Makes perfect sense
