someone sent me a URL to a review here:

Sounds pretty awful - lag and pixelation, and on a network with so few users at the moment.
Anyone here got a firsthand review of actually using the service?

i had high hopes, having seen a demo of EDVD video call a long time ago. Is it just initial hiccups? is it just inital early handsets being crap? or it that herald review just plain wrong?

The guy that wrote that article is a idiot and I find it works fine even in very low coverage, I have used VC lots he complains about talking over the top of each other I bet the guy always only wanted to speak and not give the other person a chance to speak. His writing reports out of 10 is -3

There appear to be some major problems in the Auckland CBD, 3G keeps dropping in and out and video is crap. Outside the CBD things seem fine and I've yet to hear of any issues in Wellington.

Auckland city I say would be a issue area due to many reasons of landscape and other issues Jama would be able to explain better. I have being in a video call with 0 bars of coverage just as it was about to jump back to GSM but it went fine.

this herald guy is an idiot. Actualluy What am I SAYING!!!!! The whole Herald is worth only for lighting fires now. Gone are the well written articles of old and now it's just a sleazy gossip rag with toooo many ADS ADS ADS ADS and a pile of drivvel fitted in across 3 pages where the ADS don't fit together.

3g is fine. yes it's expensive but so were digital cellphones in 1992, and CDMA phones in 2000, and Vodafone live phones in 2002.

Today I bought a V800. Have thrashed the poor thing.

I'm very impressed. Video calling does indeed go pixelated when you are moving it around rapidly (way the CODEC works over limited bandwidth) but it still works very very well and will have it's uses in the coming weeks.

forgetting for moment the intelligence level of the reporter's posterior.... lets look at what the reporter actually said:

1. "if you move around too much, you'll get picture distortion in the form of pixelation"
2. "There's also a rather unacceptable level of lag"
3 "... leads to rather jilted conversations as both parties unintentionally interrupt"
4. "the music store is a horrible mess"
5. "... any songs you download will play only on the phone" (drm)
6. "... the V800 .... won't play Windows Media Audio files, which means the only way to get music onto this phone right now is to either buy it from Vodafone, or download it illegally.
7. "... at the price this phone is selling for, a two-gigabyte stick should come standard"
8. "Despite numerous tries, I couldn't get a single (television) clip to play without serious lag and interruption"
9. " in central Auckland .... the phone seemed to pop in and out of 3G coverage"
10. "You'll be lucky to make it through a day of moderate use without recharging."
11. "Song downloads are a whopping $3.50 each"

number six is a pretty dumb statement - i guess he never heard of buying mp3s (the phones do mp3, right?)
number seven is .... umm... why?

The rest - can people confirm which statements are true? I saw alot of video lag, and pixelation, but ht voice did not seem to lag. I don't think it makes the system un-usable, so i disagree with the reporter's conclusion, but he aint lying.

ummm. have you never heard of BUYING A CD and then ripping it?
"moderate use" is not playing around with it all day with the camera's torch light on. , it' has a better battery life than my Nokia 2280 and that phone is MONOCHROME!

I got one and it's good. I made a report of the varios files it plays in another forum.

If you purchased an mp3 or cd from say coke tunes, digirama.. used one of your drm uses to burn it to a cd and ripped back I assume its all legal but may be blurred around stripping the drm from the file. In my experience the handsets arent DRM protected anymore but the files are. An illustration of this is a VFlive k700i prevented mp3 ringtones but the Nokia 6680 I have at the moment has no problems with me loading it up with mp3s apart from limited memory. So if you source your mp3s in a fashion you see fit then it shouldnt be a problem.

2gb mem stick duo pro approx $400? at least? Expansys lists at about 450 aus$
a 1gb from gpstore is $250 and 239 at flashcards.co.nz

oh a heads up apparently sandisk outperform sony branded sticks although there is some co-operation in production

Ripping copyrighted content from CD to another format is illegal in NZ. the copyright act expressly forbids "format shifting"
so, you'll need to buy music already in the mp3 format, or you'll need to get permission from the copyright holder to rip from CD.

However the RIAA in New Zealand have opposed the (probable) law change in NZ that will make format shifting illegal. They have publically said that they would prefer the status quo and however accept that people are currently format shifting music in NZ and would not prosecute anybody for doing this. This really shows you the IQ level of these people, on one hand they expect a judge to convict a music pirate using a copyright law but on the other hand would prefer people break another law because they would prefer that to a law change.

At least we not do have options for legally downloading music in NZ, it wasn't long ago you had idiots like Michael Glading (former head of Sony NZ) who proudly boasted about carrying around his iPod full of music when the only way he could of got that music there was format shift.. hmm..
