I am needing to update my SE P800 as it has an intermittent microphone.

Am considering getting a 3G phone to use higher data speed via bluetooth from my Powerbook.

Is anyone using a 3G phone with their mac? Comments suggestions?

I dont need data access regularly enough to justify buying a PC Card.

It will work the same as your P800 just much faster data speeds if your in 3G coverage!

Bluetooth is bluetooth really and shold not make much difference but I have used most of the SEs handsets with no issues, The dial up number is still the same nothing changes.

Yes and no. The problem is still that you need some sort of ability to connect to the phone so check out this site for a list of supported phones:

But it seems the V800 is supported.

There are a number of Modem Scripts that you can download and I've found the scripts from this site seem to get more speed out of them than the standard Apple ones:

http://www.taniwha.org.uk/

Note that when using these scripts you do NOT enter a dial-up number as it is already part of the script.

This site also tells you how to configure the phones for the Vodafone network here in NZ.

It should be stressed that the site quoted above relates only to support for iSync. It is entirely possible that a bluetooth handset not listed there can be used as a modem, provided that a suitable modem script is available.

Actually that is a good point. Some of the phones on the iSync list don't have modem scripts. I can think of the P900 being one of them. I was looking at things the wrong way around. On having said that though I covered my butt with the Taniwha site. ;-)

I've been using a Nokia 6630 with a G4 Powebook and it has worked OK. The 6630 is the model before the 6680 which is the phone that Vodafone has launched with over here so performance should be equal or better. I do have some problems with the 6630 using the 3G access. The main issue is that it sometimes loses the connection and then the Mac (OS X 10.4) will sit there saying 'Disconnecting' and never release the connection without a reboot. Hopefully that has been fixed in the 6680. iSync syncing works perfectly so no problems there.

I had the same problem with my T610, but it appeared to be resolved after I changed to a different modem script. You might want to see if you can get hold of an alternative script for your handset and see if that makes a difference.
