I have bought into the country a NEC 338 phone. it is able to connec to the australian 3g network but unable to connect to the NZ 3g network. It is not locked, and is 3g capable. A technical friend suggested that it maybe the simcard is not strong enough ie 128kb (not yet availabl on Vodafone) Does this sound fimiliar to anyone?

All SIM cards sold in NZ now are 128kb :)

128k or 64K you should check the handset is W-CDMA 2100mhz

Any store that has 64k SIM cards left have old stock. There are ONLY 128k SIM cards being distributed now... 2100Mhz is the only frequency (at this stage) the WCDMA is implemented on :)

Patariki.. can it even find the 3G network?? Do a manual network search and see if it picks it up..

There is 1700mhz W-CDMA out there. Not in commerical use though and is being tested by vodafone Japan

Completed the manual network search still nothing!! only picks up the 2g network. Is it possible that the 128k card will make a difference??

WCDMA is the official name for the communications standard used on the Vodafone 3G network - in Europe is also known as UMTS or 3GSM. They use these names to prevent people confusing WCDMA with CDMA - they have similarities, but not all the way.

Back to the topic. What network was this phone connected before? I take it was 3 (Hutchison)? Are you sure it is not locked to that network?

Are you sure it's not locked? My understanding is that all phones sold by 3 in Australia are locked to the 3 network, even if you pay their "full" price for them without a contract.

Definately not locked guys as the normal txt,call functions are fine. This phone coming into the nz market will be reasonably priced at $350. I have tried a 128kb sim and the 3g functions work well obviously except streaming. still cant understand why the 128kb makes that difference? can anyone explain??

Many new phones will not function with an old SIM card due to the different voltage, this was obviously your problem. It is an issue that even some Vodafone stores are not aware of, I got my uncle got a new phone and still had his old BellSouth SIM (which I was unaware of). It kept saying insert SIM so he went into two Vodafone stores who both said the phone must be dodgy despite him explaining he had an old SIM that Vodafone will give you a new SIM for free. He gave up on that and eventually rang 777 who sent him a voucher for a free SIM2 upgrade.

Still having problems with this Phones. Does not connect to the WAP or send PXT. Is their firmware available to convert and enter NZ settings for the Wap & Pxt settings only!! as the NZ Vodafone connection is fine with the 128k simcard??

I have a "3" phone as well... LG u8130. I DO get options to change my settings, albeit their titles are abit different. BUT, I can't send PXT, nor get a color version of Vodafone Live, just the B&W version... Video calling is fine though

Anyway, I have a old SIM... 64k, the early version of SIM2s... How does that affect my phone??? Any improvement if I upgrade to 128k???

having a 128kb simcard acts similar to RAM in your computer it speeds up the processing of the info.
Have learnt more about the NEC range, LG as well. It connects using the "3 NETWORK" which is available in Australia, UK, Asia but not yet NZ as the 3g Vodafone Network is recent. Im sure it is a licence issue.

The memory on the SIM does not help anything on the phone processing - it is not used for anything but storage of SIM Toolkit programs (not widely available anymore) and for some phonebook storage - and most phones use their internal memory for this.

The 3 network will not be available in New Zealand. 3 is a mobile operator, part of the Huchison Group, in Australia actually a partnership between Hutchison, Telstra, AAPT (Telecom New Zealand).

The only 3G operators in New Zealand are Vodafone NZ (UMTS, WCDMA) and Telecom New Zealand (CDMA 1x RTT, EVDO).

The SIM card to connect to the Vodafone 3G network can be any card - I am using a five year old card on my 3G Universal right now.

I think your phone is not connecting to the Vodafone NZ network because it is probably SIM locked to 3.
