Ok, so I'm finally sick of trying to prod Telecom into action for over 3 months now over my annoyingly slow ADSL upload speeds (~400k and I'm 200m from the cabinet!) and then it hits me... This is a new subdivision... I wonder...  One quick phonecall later... (You're all going to hate me...)

MY HOUSE HAS FIBRE!!!

30/6mbit connection here I come baby!!!  WOOOHOOO!!!  HOW DID I NOT THINK OF THIS BEFORE!!??  XNet SO need to do a flyer drop around here!!!  (No... no that's a bad idea, that would RUIN my 1:33 contention ratio... I NEED all 1000mbit of backhaul for myself... I don't CARE that I only have a 30mbit connection, it's MINE!!  All of it!!  MIIIINE!!... myyyy preciouuuuuus....) ....Ahem.

After making this exciting discovery, I briefly considered staying with ADSL (I know, I know...) but I feel I have a duty... nay.. an OBLIGATION! to all of my fellow geeks who would kill to be living in my street, to get fibre installed and bask in the wonderous glory that is; a mainline to the Internet.  An obligation to obtain a connection unfettered by petty copper interconnects and analogue to digital conversions, a connection with latency so low that pinging geekzone is like pinging your HTPC downstairs, a connection so fast!, that even a local Akamai server will struggle to swamp it!  Yes, I have decided to make the $199 install fee and $30 per month sacrifice... for you, my fellow geeks.  And while you may punish me with harsh words and savage abuse, I will stand fast; steady in the knowledge that if our roles were reversed, you would do the same for me, and suffer what I will suffer, for the sake of all geekkind!

But before I leap feet first into the world of zero lag, I'm wondering if anyone else out there has XNet fibre!?  I cannot, in my wildest dreams, imagine that the experience of FTTH could POSSIBLY be worse in any way, shape or form, than ADSL (or anything else for that matter), but you know, you have to do your research on this kind of thing.  I'm interested in how the install went and what your experiences have been like with your connection. (PM me if you're worried about personal reprisals for revealing your identities in public...)

In closing, I'd like to quote one of the most insightful and thought provoking men of our time... Barney Gumble:

"Just hook it to my veins!!!"

How much of a difference will it really make if you are still restricted by xnet's woeful international bandwidth? Read the threads on here, problem has been around for nearly 2 years.

I've not had a problem with the standard HSI plan... I normally get 1.3mbytes/sec during non-peak times (now for instance) on my current ADSL2 connection and the lowest it usually goes is 250kbytes/sec, but that's only during really heavy traffic times and it doesn't drop this low often. I'm fairly happy with these speeds! But yes, when you're only getting 250kbytes/sec due to international traffic contention there's not much point, but when you can get full speed.... man I could pull some serious data!!! :D

Yeah but I still can't see your international speeds improving dramatically but you never know.

You can fly a jet to the coast but if you then swap to a DC-3 you still gonna arrive late if you know what I mean.

Make sure you let us know how you get on.

Hahaha... I think it might break it!!

Naa, heaps of bandwidth there.. I've seen it up to 60mbits on a commercial fibre connection before.

Well, I can pretty much max out my current ADSL2 which connects at ~15mbit, so we'll see. Still, you can't beat 6mbit upload tho... that'll be handy. I'll definitely keep you posted! Apparently the install wait time is 2 weeks plus I have to get some info from the property developers, so could be a few weeks...

True but the problem isn't really how fast that pipe is, it's how much of it your ISP has leased.

I've had fibre running past my home for years in Edgewater, Pakuranga, Auckland.; don't know anyone connected to it and some of the connection stubs are broken. Never seen it advertised either. Keen to see how it goes for you in case one day I decide to go video on demand.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Gutted!!

It seems that the XNet sales guy made a mistake and I DON'T have fibre installed in my house  Cry  The new sub-division across the road however, does. :(   I feel a house move coming on :D

Apparently the story (at least with the new sub-divisions) is that if you have copper, you don't have fibre, it's one or the other.  Apparently all new fibre connected homes have a patch panel in the garage and cat5 structured cabling throughout the house.

The only good news out of today's discovery is that apparently new sub-divisions with copper installed are pre-ducted to allow easy installation of fibre, so maybe we'll have fibre installed sooner rather than later...

<sigh>  I guess I'll just have to keep harrassing Telecom to get my upload speeds fixed :(

A bit off topic but can anyone tell me if you are building a new house would it be wise to lay some fibre cable from the telecom box to the house in addition to the standard phone cable? If so where does one get the cable from?

I'd say you'd probably be best to just lay ducting (I guess you'd have to lay the right type of ducting tho - no idea what that is, but a cabling contractor can probably tell you easily enough)
