If buying a VodafoneNZ-acquired iPhone from Trademe, is there a chance the iPhone could have been purchased on a contract with a handset subsidy, and if so what are the consequences for me as the second hand buyer if the original owner defaults on their On Account obligations?

Can my iPhone then be "repossessed" or somehow blocked from working on the network? If this is possible then how can I protect myself from this scenario?

It can certainly be "blacklisted" at any time in the future if it's been stolen. If you're spending that much it might be worth forking out a little bit extra to have the dealer support and no hassles.

The same is true of any device, though (being blacklisted because of theft).

As for obligations regarding payment, they remain with the seller and not with you - unless you are acquiring the mobile contract as well.

Contract is with the customer not the hardware vodafone NZ would never blacklist a handset cause of non payment. Lost or stolen handsets yes but only with police report from owner.

I got burnt with a stolen phone from trademe. It was blacklisted 3 months after I bought it. I would only buy a phone from trademe with a GST receipt now.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
