I'm sure some of you have noticed but ...

The History channel on Channel 73 will go widescreen from Monday 1st March 2010. (Any 4x3 programmes will appear pillar-boxed).

Good job TCL, or should I say sky.

Maybe one day every channel will be widescreen!

History channel doesn't look wide screen to me. Have bars all 4 sides of picture. Now march 4th. I'm on sky, maybe they forgot to push the button. Hows it on Telstra?

That's because you're watching on a 4:3 TV with your Sky box set to 4:3 Letterbox.

On widescreen there is black bars on the left and right hand side of the screen for old 4:3 content.

The channel is broadcast full time in 16:9 so any old content (4:3) will be adapted to fit this.  It's the same scenario on TV1, TV2 and TV3 on Sky with old 4:3 content.

It's the same on TelstraClear.  Sky channels are simply passed through.

I'm on a wide screen TV and watching with mysky decoder. It is the only widescreen channel doing this . It is also connected through HDMI. Other channels full up screen when wide screen program on.

OK, I'm seeing it now on programme "How The Earth Was Made".

This looks like ..

  • Programme was originally 16:9

  • Has been converted and encoded into their system as 4:3 Letterbox

  • Is being broadcast as 16:9

I have some contacts at Sky so will chase it up with them.

Thanks. Also if I press setup on remote I can change to pillar box and full screen and 14:9. On full time wide screen channels it is greyed out and not able to be changed. From this I'd conclude they forgot to turn the wide screen code on in the signal.

You can't change that on 16:9 channels I've found.  It is only available on 4:3 Channels (handy to stretch out those Discovery programmes broadcast in 4:3 Letterbox).

I emailed Sky a few days ago about this. Got this reply:

Due to operational reasons the overseas originator has advised they need to postpone the change for one week, so this now due take place on Monday 8th March at 4.30am.

So I guess it's wait and see.

2010 and we still have 4:3 on these networks, I am a Sky direct customer by the way but the results are the same.

Our TV sits on the living channel a lot, (not me watching it) and its always screwed-o-vision. Why cannot Living and FoodTV get their stuff sorted. I was in Aus recently and noted that the two Foxtel networks that carry the same source material as the two noted above seem to get the AR correct, lets get with the program!!!!

Zolly, if you can talk to your contacts maybe you can convince them to put pressue on these channels to sort this. I have spoken to Living Channel a couple of times but all I get is blithering idots!!!

I've quizzed a contact today over Food TV and Living Channel.  Don't worry, the aspect ratios drive me nuts too.

it's odd the new Sky Pace boxes don't have an option like 'always 16:9' (which most Dreamboxes have). This means that channels like Sky Sport will be proper widescreen, while other channels like ESPN will have the pillar box on them. That will work for all outputs. As long as the broadcaster sends the AR flag, it works perfectly.
