Hi guys,

I recently changed my plan from standard xnet flood plan to fusion and am having problems getting my phone to work.

I purchased a RT31P2 off trademe and I've configured my setup thusly.

I have a router/modem connected to the phone jack in the wall with the appropriate filter applied and my internet connection works just fine.

I have connected the RT31P2 with the supplied ethernet cable from the "Internet" port on the RT31P2 to one of the ports on my router/modem. My phone is connected to the Phone 1 port on the RT31P2.

I read a thread from 08 by a user "Aaron15" or something like that where he had another linksys router with similar setup pages etc. and I googled a way to enter the appropriate URL provided by xnet into the "Provisions" tab for the RT31P2 and saved that configuration. I powered off the router and restarted after 10 minutes.

The Phone 1 light is lit up and I have a dial tone on my phone but I can't make any calls, I hear the dialing but then there's no sound for ~5-6 seconds then I hear beeping, following by really loud angry beeping ~10 seconds after that.

I've spent a few hours today scouring the internet for any info of people using this router with xnet but can't find anyone with problems (This router has been sold on trademe many times and is touted as being compatible with VFX according to the seller).

Basically I've hit a brick wall at the moment and some guidance would be super awesome ;)

Alex

I think you've been conned by the seller on TradeMe.  I have been using VFX for almost 4 years now and have never heard of any compatible device called an RT31P2.  I've just checked on this page:

http://www.xnet.co.nz/vfx/hardware.shtml

which is the official list of supported hardware, and sure enough it isn't listed.  The only possibility would be that it is a very new device which is still under testing by Xnet.  But because you have said "this router has been sold on TradeMe many times", and the TradeMe auction says "Refurbished" that leads me to believe it is not a new device.

I also noticed this:

Will work with 2Talk, iTalk, VFX (at your own risk for VFX users)

In other words, the seller doesn't guarantee it will work with VFX.  The only way I can see to make it work, is by using an Asterisk box as well as the RT31P2.

My advice would be to try and get your money back as you have been sold something that isn't what you want.  The seller did warn you however, by saying "at your own risk", so he/she may say that it's your fault that this situation has occurred.

Good Luck!

This device was primaraily sold for Vonage and has presumably been unlocked. I suspect the provisioning setup for this device differs from the newer Linksys devices that VFX support.

Did you tell WxC the type of device you had when you signed up? Can you make an inbound call at all?

This device is not supported so we will not automatically provision it, so basically I think your device is not configured at all at this point, The provisioning link is device specific as it supplies configuration and firmware updates for supported devices this device is a very old box and not supported directly by us.

When signing up you would have had to have told us of the device type and MAC address, you could ask for an asterisk profile, we will then send you the account details and you will need to configure the box yourself.

Yep, or better still, a SPA2102 as it's a much newer device.

In the light of what Mav has said above, I think this seller is being deceitful.  The RT31P2 has never been supported by VFX, so for him to simply gloss over that fact by saying "at your own risk" is very dodgy.

It supports Fax using T38 protocol whereas PAP2T doesn't.

We send the occasional fax over VFX and it works perfectly most of the time to NZ numbers.  International never seems to work, and just occasionally, I have had an NZ number not work, but it is extremely rare.

If faxing doesn't matter to you, by all means go for the PAP2T.  I have owned a couple of these, and never had any problem with either of them.

However, the SPA2102 is a much newer design, and it has the additional benefit of supporting prioritisation of outgoing VoIP packets, if you use it in "router" configuration.  In my experience, using the SPA2102 as a router to prioritise VoIP packets slowed the network throughput down, so I didn't bother with that mode, instead just using the SPA2102 as an ATA (with only one ethernet port connected).

Be aware that the PAP2T-NA is not supported either (note the -NA for North America). Some time ago there were guys selling those on TradeMe. Some of them are also copies and not real Linksys devices. On this forum is a "sticky post" about it.

Personally I prefer the SPA2102 as well.

And just be aware that there are a lot of cheap PAP2NA's on Trademe all ex Asia. These are dirt cheap on ebay and can be picked up for around US$20 each.

Some of these boxes appear to be Asian clones, some are refurbished ex Vonage devices from the USA that have been unlocked.
