Why is buffering apparently a problem with TNVZ OnDemand content, and not with TV3's

TVNZ is effectively unwatchable. (on a Telstra cable Lightspeed connection).

I believe that TVNZ OnDemand is hosted by Citylink which routes via the USA because of TCL's (non)peering policy.

It's definitely not from TVNZ side of things, their servers are more than capable of coping with the bandwidth, even in on peak times.

TV3 used to be slow - but they invested heavily on their Video on Demand infrastructure last year - and it is actually a joy to watch it without any noticeable lag.

Re your comment about TVNZ - I watched one show in its entirety this week (Apprentice) and the buffering was hardly noticeable.

Hmmm.. must be me then. Perhaps its the wireless connection in the house. Odd that the TV3 stuff manages it ok though.

Stuart mentioned what the problem is above. TelstraClear don't peer domestic traffic. When you view TVNZ OnDemand content using TCL it comes from the USA and not locally from within NZ. This can result in buffering or slow speeds at busy times.

This is pathetic. We watch TvnzOnDemand a lot. On Orcon it was unmetered and we could enjoy 700kbps. On TelstraClear 300kps harldy works at night.
TelstraClear is so slow compared to Orcon. The delays are horrible (we use WorldXChange VFX and there's always echo).
The only reason we're with TelstraClear is the cost: you can't beat an internet only plan.
And also, I have no idea how fast ADSL2 is the area.
I'm just waiting to see how homemedia turns out but really, I'll be always watching for alternatives.

Fault on both sides imo....

Citylink doesn't want to pay to interconnect with the two largest ISP's in the country ie: Telecom and Telstra (with a combined over 70% residential market share for internet).

Telecom and Telstraclear don't want to peer at the CityLink run APE and WIX peering exchanges.

I have found that hard to understand (as I am sure many others do). The cost of peering must be far outweighed by the additional traffic cost on the SX cable routing all that traffic to the US. Of course then just pass it on to us so perhaps they don't care.

I can't watch TVNZ streaming at home at all. I do at work but one of the ISP's we have has unlimited national traffic and peers with Citylink so it's pretty fast.
