It was brought to my attention there are some problems with Vodafone Mobile Broadband service today. Apparently they are aware of it.

You may encounter an authentication/login error 619 when trying to connect to their network.

Anyone else could clarify coverage impact?

Im seeing this (mostly 3G connection drops) in Hamilton and have been since around lunchtime.

The impact is only customers trying to connect not connections already connected

Ok, this is funny, but the Vodafone twitter says to check your mobile if you have mobile problems (although that site also works on the desktop)...

FYI:

We?re having an intermittent issue with IP addresses not being released. This means some customers may not be able to connect to the internet on their first attempt. Customers should try to connect again and should be able to get on to the web.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

Our engineers are working to resolve this issue at the highest priority and will keep this post updated with any changes to the situation.

We?ve experienced a huge increase in demand for mobile devices in the past few weeks and we are moving quickly to meet that demand.

Error 619 is an error connecting to the GGSN that hosts that APN.
There are 3 general reasons why this happens
1. A DNS issue means that the SGSN cannot find the correct GGSN to connect to
2. A network issue means that the SGSN/RNC cannot reach the correct GGSN
3. The GGSN is refusing connections

As John said it would not be a new RNC aka XT

EDIT: As paul just replied at the exact same time Laughing
the reason would be number 3. the GGSN is refusing connections, as it has run out of IP addresses to allocate

Paul, was this demand for mobile devices a result of increased number of users moving from Telecom XT?

Would you call this an "overload"?

It seems (from the NZNOG list) Vodafone is working to expand the IP address pool allocated to certain APNs. Too many mobile data users not releasing the IP addresses it seems.
