Hi all

I am currently connecting through internet and home phone through telstra clear, but i have a friend who lives up the road saying that i am getting slower speeds then i should be getting, when i got the plan i didnt realise there was a option to choose what speed i can get with the plan so i suspect i have gotten the mid option, i would just like to know if these speeds are the normal speeds i should be getting at all, aparantly im connected directly to the exchange thats the reason my friend has told me i should be getting better speeds

That's fairly poor for ADSL.

Are you on ADSL, or ADSL2? What modem are you using? Are you using a filter on all your phone jacks?

I've seen so many problems of people with "slow speed" where they've plugged the ADSL modem into the "phone" jack on the ADSL filter. I'm amazed it even worked.

Ring TelstraClear and at least get them to help troubleshoot.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Those statistics are in line with your speedtest. You are currently in a Full Speed Download/128k Upload plan. By Full Speed it means as fast as your phone line allows, which in your case is a max of 4mbit/s.

Your speedtest is coming in at 3.65mbit/s which is about right for the overheads (you will never actually reach 4mbit/s)

So basically, your line won't go any faster in terms of download speed, even if you changed ISP. For upload speed, you could move to a full speed upload plan however this wouldn't be beneficial to you for general internet use (moreso for gaming and multiple people using one connection).

Though it does seem like a low sync rate for 19dB attenuation, though others might want to comment on it

Looking at this it tells me you're probably on a plan with 128kbps upstream, because of this your downstream speed is being limited and won't go any faster.

To get faster speeds you need to change plans to a FS/FS plan.

Specifically, if you're using TCP,* each packet you receive downstream needs to be acknowledged before additional downstream packets will be sent. A typical downstream packet will have a maximum size of 1500 bytes, whereas a TCP ACK packet is 40 bytes (including IPv4 headers). This means that your downstream rate will never be more that 37.5 times faster than your upstream rate. An upstream rate of 128 kb/s will limit your downstream rate to 4800 kb/s.

*) Most common layer 7 protocols such as http, ftp, etc. currently operate over TCP.

I would also consider changing your username and password for access to the modem. Not very secure leaving it at defaults
