I recently upgraded to the Lightspeed 2MB plan (2M each way, 10G limit). While it worked fine for the first week or so it began to become quite lousy lately. Constant web sites timing out, having to try the URL more than once, poor speeds etc.

Called TS and they checked my line and said the signal quality was very poor and would dispatch a tech. Actually this makes sense and my cable picture has been rather poor lately though I can't imagine what happened.

Out of interest I checked the signal level myself and noticed it was down to -16dBMv (should hover around -9 I am told). For those who have cable modems connected to a router I wonder if you could share your signal levels. Just put the following URL into your browser (unless you have changed the IP address of your modem)

http://192.168.100.1/signal.html

Thanks

Do you mean the "Downstream Power Level"? In my case it's 0 dBmV...

Yes that's what I mean - downstream power. My house is on a subdivided section so the drop from the pole to the house is about 30m. TCL keep telling me that's why my TV reception isn't the best

Analogue but plan to move to digital next week (not because I think the picture will be better but because the SO wants the Food Network!)

What is your description of "bad tv"? The distance you are shouldn't result in many problems, I begin to wonder where your problems are more related to a faulty connection somewhere or a network issue in your area.

Bad TV is a signal with flickering horizontal interference lines (especially on TV3). I have had the techs over many times to look at it. Their conclusion - 1) far from the pole 2) and then around from the demarc to the point outlet is a bit far.

Hopefully digital will fix that (should be less susceptible to analogue noise) but of course I don't expect DVD quality picture based on what I have seen before and what I know about how TCL capture, process and send the signal down

Just had the TCL tech over - after some mucking around doing testing, replaced the old modem. Now my signal is -13 which is a bit better but download testing is much faster and more reliable

There is also a DHCP server in the modems but it's pretty hopeless.

I guess TCL don't want us to know? I think I spoke too soon. The connection is misbehaving again. If I have a substantial download going (say over 25Kbs) then browsing fails intermittently. With 2Mb downstream you would expect to be able to maintain a download of 30kB/s and still browse okay

My current reading is -12 dBmV

What other cable devices do you have in your house?

Is it just one cable modem and one cable television? Or do you have more than one cable tv outlet that currently has no device attached?

I have 2 TV's and one cable modem. But I do split the signal where the cable modem comes in so I can feed it into my video capture card on my when I was using the PC as as PVR (don't now). Removed the split and the signal increased to -7/8 which is good

However (and I have been on the phone with TCL for the past 30 minutes) the problem hasn't gone away. I run with a router (Dlink but occasionally use a Belkin) (who doesn't with a high speed connection) and I am finding I have erratic service. When the connection is working, I can be running a fairly decent download on my machine (connected directly to the switch) up to 60Kbs and others in the house over 802.11b/g can still work fine. Then frequently the downloads will slowdown to a snail's pace and if I try on my machine to access a site, I will get timeouts. Even on TCL or Paradise so it's not an overseas access issue. Then a few minutes later it will be okay again.

Try explaining that to TS - they ping the model, check signal level and proclaim all is well! I am trying to get a tech to come and check all wiring, from the pole to demarc to the outlets checking for loose connections, moisture etc. No luck so far

If Telecom had a high speed with decent upload speeds I would be tempted to switch

sounds like a 256k connection to me - with 2mb on telecom I get around the 160k mark on a download and can still surf ok. However when I dropped to 256k for a while I had the same symptoms that you describe. Have you done some sort of speed test?

I have just done a speed test based on www.dslreports.com. Despite the instructions I had other downloads running at the same time. I got the following results

Welcome to BBR! Run more tests! see forums
2005-12-12 01:03:58 EST: 1267 / 1178
Your download speed : 1267 kbps or 158.4 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 1178 kbps or 147.3 KB/sec.

So I guess I am running a 2Mbs connection but the problem I have is intermittent dropouts. I have just changed to (the 3rd!) router to see if that fixes the problem
