Hi

How can I troubleshoot slow internet download speed.

We have a Lightspeed cable connection but the on-line speed test estimates download at only 2-2.5Mbps and I am only getting arround 11Kb/s (!!) from National Archives in UK. I previously downloaded similar files for the same place using our office Telecom broadbaqnd with no such problem.

Any ideas or suggestions for working out where the bottleneck is?

Have you ever tested successfully for faster speeds?
Reason I ask is that when TCL gave the free upgrade from 2Mbps to 10Mbps (which must be some time ago now), a couple of people I knew didn't change until we contacted TCL.

Good point. I think that is a problem. However even at 2Mbps I'd expect better than a 10k file transfer rate!

Well, that was fun. Tried the "on-line chat" help -- when i could finally track down the button on the unbelievably tangled TC website. Only to learn that mine was a 'technical' query that can't be dealt with on-line as they might require me to perform certain tasks!

But they did ask if there was anything else they could do!!!!!! What great service.

What speedtest are you using? If you use the Wellington one it won't be accurate as TCL don't peer at WIX.

I get pretty close to 10Mb/s on the Auckland site. It's just slightly under because of the QoS settings on my router.

If you're only getting 2 Mb/s to Auckland you're probably stuck on 2Mb/s in the provisioning system.

This doesn't explain the slow speeds to the UK though - if speeds are very slow on TCL while fast on another ISP you really need to start looking at some traceroutes to see the traffic routing. If both are different the issue could be anywhere upstream. If the routing is the same the site is possibly performing some form of traffic shaping depending on the destination IP.

Hmmm.... who knows..... how do you decide which site you are using.

Meanwhile on hold (longest waiting caller ahead is 11 minutes).,.... the IVR system can recognise certain phrases .. but presumably not the ones I'm thinking of!

Fun trivia question for TC users (courtesy of their IVR) : Do you nhave a Paradise or Clearnet connection? "Huh, what?...let me see... that must;ve been back in '97...."

So you still have not provided the simple results of a speedtest to a reputed NZ server (use Auckland, Tauranga or Hamiliton, infact report on all three thanks) to confirm if you modem, connection or provisioning is correct or if we are chasing a international speed issue in which case you step into the wild unknown that few can answer.

FWIW, I am experiencing slow download speeds on international links.  Speedtest is giving 10Mbps to Auckland from Wellington, but to New York it reports a zippy 0.35Mbps or lower.

Well of course it helps when you discover that the 'speedtest' people refer to is speedtest.net and when you fugre out that you can test the speed to a variety of locations.

So, big surprise, TC can deliver about 7.5Mbps locally within the city, but rather less to a fabulously remote place like Auckland and a Fair Trading-boggligly pathetic 0.5Mb from UK.

Gosh knows how other consumers also figure out that you need to know exactly how your ISP's network is physically connected together in case you expect to do something 'now' like watching TVNZ on Demand (streamed via the US).
