if i want to top up my vodafone prepay account using my credit card, is it safer to do it online than over the phone? if i top up online by logging into vodafone's website and entering my credit card details and then i call 777 to top up by credit card, my credit card won't be added to the 777 top up would it?

Its safe either way you do it

Or you could always try Hotlink depending on the bank you are with

It's all very safe. Even if something does go wrong, your bank can always reverse any unauthorised use.
