Does anyone know if its possible to use a SIP client on a mobile device (in my case sipdroid on my HTC desire) to connect to VFX over my home WiFi connection?  I have xnet fusion, and currently a linksys wag device with the analog phone ports.  My ideal solution would to be get rid of the old analog phone and just have my mobile phone/SIP client.

Is it as simple as plugging in the SIP server settings on the application or is there more to it than that?

Thanks in advance
Matt

Only currently approved devices (ATA/routers, SIP phones) can be connected to their network for VoIP. There is a special Asterisk account but you would have to run your own Asteris VoIP server 24/7 plus configure everything. Not really a "POTS replacement".

So in another words, not possible without some investment and management time.

Ok, so its a policy decision to restrict end user devices rather than being a technical limitation of the service?  I would presume though that if the settings are known that it coould actually be achieved?

The devices are remotely configured, based on MAC addresses. This is to avoid problems caused by misconfiguration.

If you run your own device and create a bad configuration you wouldn't be able to blame anyone but yourself if your rules are wrong. What if you create a wrong rule that won't hangup when calling a mobile phone? Would you be happy to pay for the long calls?

What if you run a PBX and because of your wrong configuration someone scams you (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=95&topicid=57078)?

They run a tight outfit. If you like "freedom" then you can try other services.

You can use anhy device if you have an Asterisk profile on your account. You just need to be aware that not all hardware/software will support the unique SIP UserID and AuthID that WxC use as added security.

You can't use a non Asterisk VFX account with any other device.

Thanks.  Take your point about security and it is a very valid point. Totally understand xnet not wanting customers to get into trouble.

But this is not a PBX I am talking about here, simply a softphone client running on an android phone. If it were a softphone running on a PC, would it be any different?  I have a known wireless mac address I could supply and have registered to avoid scams. Anyway this may all be a moot point, since as you have pointed out only "permitted" devices are allowed.

Anyway, I might take a look at conversant.co.nz as they do seem to allow generic SIP client softphones and other IP phones to connect to their service.

There is nothing stopping you from connecting any device - you just need to specify you want a VFX profile. All configuration is left to you.
