{I've done this before with other ISP's & DSL devices, so I know it to be possible, but I'm trying to eliminate some factors here}

I connect to XNet via PPPoA, using a TP-Link TD-8840 device.
MC/MUX, MTU=1492, UID=username@adsl.xnet..co.nz, etc All those standart ISP-supplied settings.

I also have an old-ish D-Link DSL-502T modem on-hand (one of those Telecom jobbies).

For my firewall, I use FreeBSD-based systems (presently using pfSense, both v.1.2.3 release & v.2b).

I'm trying to switch from PPPoA to PPPoE, sot that I only use my "modem" *only* for "dialing", and let my firewall do all the heavy-lifting it's designed to do.
One of the reasons is that I want to eliminate double-NAT, reduce latency & have better control over my environment (i.e. I have more confidence inthe security of my firewall than that of my modem).

I've set up similar configs in the past, but I'm having absolutely no luck in my present setup.
I've set the modem to full-bridge mode, and supplied my authentication details on the firewall, but I am unable to connect.

I've run this issue by the firewall's forum, and it has been suggested that it may be an issue related to my ISP, since there may be significant differrences in the way PPPoA & PPPoE connect

Does anyone have a similar setup (pfSense connecting over PPPoE), using XNet as an ISP, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

The Telecom / Telecom Wholesale ADSL network is only PPPoA, so that is the only way the ADSL modem can connect to Xnet. Vodafone's Red Network, and I'm guessing Orcon & TelstraClears own gear maybe too, can connect using PPPoE.

Alternatively, you can get a Draytek Vigor 120 or 2700e. This can be put into PPPoA to PPPoE bridge mode, enabling your router to connect using PPPoE.

With the TP Link TD8840 you can use PPPoA half bridge (it's called IP Extension in that particular modem admin ui's) to "bridge" to your firewall/gateway.

I managed to get half-bridge mode working back when I was using smoothwall and a dynalink rta1320. The benefits are large so don't stop till you get it working :)

Although I'd just got for DD-WRT or Tomato on a cheapish wireless router over pfsense/ipcop/smoothwall/monowall etc unless you're using one of those tiny pico-itx motherboards.

I second the Draytek Vigor 120 (I've got the slightly older 100). It's 'proper' PPPoA to PPPoE passthrough, no half-bridge fudging. Works flawlessly with my WRT54GS running tomato. Only tip I'd also recommend to save you frustration: do NOT enter a 'servive name' in the PPPoE config on the router else it won't connect! :)

Thanks for the info, guys.

It'll be a while before I'm able to scratch $$$ together to buy any new kit for a while, so until then, I'll have to make do with what I've got.

Cheers

If you flash the old 502T with RouterTech firmware it becomes pretty powerful and significantly better than a stock 502T in terms of performance and stabilty.

Then you must have been on Vodafone Red network (such as Slingshot NBT) or Orcon +, because Telecom dont support it. They did make noises about a Next Generation Network a long time ago, but still no Ethernet backbone yet.

Time to find a new industry!

That's the great thing about the Dratek modems... PPPoA to PPPoE passthrough, which means you can use a much wider selection of true routers and bypass the modem entirely, leaving each device to do its own job decently.

Do Draytek make a vdsl2 capable modem that has pass through? I want to get one so I can use ipv6 with Xnet but don't want to buy it now just to find I have to get another when Telecom wholesale (finally) release vdsl2

Not much VDSL2 hardware around that I can see - certainly nothing apparent on Draytek's site, and none of the few VDSL1/2 units I've seen are pure modems or with passthrough.

This is pretty cutting edge stuff, so I'm not sure I'd recommend buying 'ahead of the curve' so to speak, with the planned intention of future-proofing. Sure, you may be future-proofed, but standards may also change leaving you with a beta (not better!) product.

When VDSL is rolled out properly, I assume modems will follow - and even then who knows how pricey it'll be, how close to the exchange you'll be and how quickly you'll chew through the piddly NZ data cap at 100Mbit/sec?

IMHO, in the meantime nab yourself a dreytek 120 now, hook it up to a decent router and see what the future brings when it brings it.
