Hey Guys

We have a website hosted by TelstraClear

At present we use about 200 MB of storage - which costs us around $250 per month

But we need to make it MUCH bigger - probably around 200 GB (yes GB not MB)

At $10 per megabyte per month it gets very expensive very quickly

Any suggestions for cost effective alternative providers that can handle huge datasets?

You will almost definitely need a dedicated server for that much diskspace, or at the very least a VPS. If you PM me your details, I will forward them to the company I use, and they can discuss the best options with you.

PS, for 200MB, you are currently paying way way too much. That shouldn't cost over $20 per month.

What are the other requirements, ie:

How much national traffic is needed (GB/month)?
How much international traffic is needed (GB/month)?
What environment: Windows/IIS/ASP.NET or Linux/Apache/php etc?
Running a database, is it MySQL, SQL Server etc?
Does it need to be hosted locally in NZ or is the US fine?

I would say co-location of your own servers in a NZ data center is usually the best option for large storage requirements for local usage. However you could look at "cloud hosting" too.

Basically I'd be tempted to buy a couple of 1U servers and co-locate them in a decent decent data center (Maxnet, Orcon, ICONZ etc). Co-location in a data center is anywhere from $100-300 per 1U depending on your requirements for traffic and bandwidth.

Maybe using a shared web host, that may allow you to host a few GB of data at a low price, and then using Amazons file hosting to host all the other files you want to host may suit. PM me and I can suggest a couple of names.

I suggest doing this.

I was going to make use of 3Bit's services, until the person i was investigating it for had a few issues.
But definitely who im going to go to if i need NZ based hosting.

CloudFiles by rackspace is another good one for what you are intending to do - the problem with these are they are international based, not a big deal as DL times are still exceptional!!
