Don't know if this has been answered before but... I've been seeing a lot of Chorus vans, are they tinkering with the internet connections therefore destabilizng it?

My internet has been slow and unstable ever since or is it me? I'm currently running on capped speeds right now when I have at least 3.4GB left to use. Upload is much higher also than download.

Are you on the Red Network? If so check here to see if you have been cabinetised;

If you have been cabinetised then you will need to call you're service provider and ask to move to a Telecom Wholesale plan rather than a UCLL plan (i.e. Red Network).

If you look at the adsl connection rates in your modem and let us know what they are. If the downstream rate is about 64kbps this can indicate possible faulty internal wiring or an unfiltered device.

Just had a look at the telecomwholesale.co.nz website. It seems like were in the pink zone which is the Cabinet, that must mean were cabinetised? :/

@Oldhat: My phones are filtered. Rates were 64kbps Down and 640 Up but now 704 Down and 672 Up. Though for the past few days it has been slow and unstable, wouldn't be surprised if the rates dropped again.

That is low, it could mean bad internal wiring, in terms of you being in a pink zone that usually means you have or will be upgraded to a cabinet there is usually a month on that page as well saying when the estimated upgrade time will be

Statistically speaking your issue is probably poor internal house wiring causing the issues.

With the Wholesale site; what date does it mention you're area (in pink) will be cabinetised?

@System and sbiddle: Great, always thought it was my home wiring. For starters, I do know that we're using a jackpoint from another room - in other words we're using a our own re-wired extension cable. I know it's a bad idea but we haven't got around to installing a new jackpoint.

Would it be a good idea now to get a technician?

Yep seems that way, just had a lood at the Chorus schedules stating 01/07/2010 for TWA/G so completely plausible they may have switched you over.

Have you tried connecting you're router the the demark and see what sort of Sync speeds you get?

Perhaps if you get a Chorus tech to come out and look you could ask them about their Service Delivery Points. Not sure if service providers (i.e. Telecom Retail, Vodafone, TelstraClear) can requests these yet

I would recommend using an ADSL2+ Router, something with a Broadcom chipset (Dlink's don't) which should work best with Telecom Wholesales equipment in the cabinet / exchange.

Cyril7 would also be able to advise if he is around?

I also had a look at the link you provided, it looks interesting and I do hope they improve home connections but as stated on the page, won't be available by late 2010.

Those super slow speeds and random dropouts is exactly like what happened to my friend when they put the cabinet in. It will be like this for a week or so, then it should come right again. After about another month, you'll see a huge increase in speed once they activate the cabinet.

Currently looking for modems with broadcom chips on Trademe. Only finding Dynalink ones right now but haven't been hearing good things about Dynalink.

I would suggest connecting the modem directly to the jackpoint. You may find that your extension cable is starting to deteriorate and this is what may be causing the fluctuations in connect rate.

The 302 should be capable of obtaining a sync speed of ~8100kbps on a dsl 2 connection if you are sufficiently close to the exchange.

Personally, I wouldn't bother purchasing a new router until that occurs.

Hi 49dB downstream attention is pushing things, but I would expect more than 1Mb/s, sounds to me like a mix of long line length and poor house wiring.

49dB is theoretically 3.5km of cable, that should easily support 5-6Mb/s assuming your house wiring or the telecom wiring to your house is not suspect, the former is definitely worth looking at, PM me if you want a line check and test.

Obviously in a few months time cabinetisation will fix most issues, but to sort out you house wiring in advance means you will get the best of whats offered.
