Mobiles are not something I know a lot about so hence the following query..... :)

I have a couple of relatives visiting NZ from Australia - one if on Vodafone AU and one with Optus - both their phones are now displaying  "VFNZ / Vodafone NZ" on screen but neither are able to make calls.... its probably something to do with roaming but as I said at the start, mobiles are not my thing.

Theyve been into Vodafone and Telecom stores at Manukau and got blank looks from both lots of staff.

Can anyone assist ? They mainly just need to be able to call one another rather than NZ numbers etc..... Im not 100% sure what they have and havent tried as yet as theyre staying on the other side of town and I havent had time to go through things with them....

Sounds like they need to contact their provider in their own country. They usually have international contact numbers if you check their website.

If they are showing a signal from a NZ provider then its a good sign that there roaming is turned on, otherwise they would get emergency calls only showing

The problem is in formatting the numbers correctly

Australian mobile numbers are often things like 0412345678 etc

for them to call each other they would need to add 0061 to the front and drop the leading 0

i.e. the number above would become 0061412345678

if they want to call a nz number e.g. 09 1234567 they would need to put 0064 in the front and drop the 0

i.e 006491234567

0061 for Australian numbers ( country of origin not current location)
0064 for NZ numbers

Hope that helps

Alternatively, drop all zeroes completely and replace with a +. E.G. +64-21-021-021 for calling an 021 mobile, +64-9-9999999 for calling a landline in Auckland....so on and so forth.

So for calling each other they need something like +61412345678

This will work while they are here and continue to work when they return to Australia.

I wouldn't use 00 as international calling codes can vary county to country, it is always best to use +

If roaming is roughly the same as Europe then they will get charged for a call to Australia then another one back to NZ.

If they want to call each other then they should consider getting a couple of PAYG SIMs for use in NZ.
I assume Voda NZ SIMs will work in a Voda Au phone.
