Hi there,

My new Airport Extreme(time capsule) arrived today and I've been having a very hard time getting it going.

I have connected it to my old vodafone d-link 502t modem. I have got things working by setting the airport extreme to bridged mode, however this means that I can't use guest networking and back to my Mac because the modem still handles dhcp and nat.

I tried setting the airport extreme to use PPPoe and tried "share public ip address" mode. Neither have worked even after I disabled dhcp and nat in the dlink and also tried switching to bridged mode in the dlink to use pppoe.

I desperately need help please, is there anyone using Apple Airport with vodafone who can advise?

I might be able to help, I have a Dynalink modem bridged to a Time Capsule.

First, do you have an AirPort Extreme or a Time Capsule? They are two different products. I'm assuming you have the AE but not sure why you wrote TC in brackets!

Second, what exactly are you wanting to 'get going'? Is it guest networking and Back to My Mac? Might be just me being a bit slow but you've said you're having a hard time getting it going then in the next line you've said it's working by being in bridge mode. Are you wanting to bridge the modem to your AE/TC and have it handle everything?

PPPoE isn't the right setting, we don't really use that in NZ so that won't work.

Is your 502T a Gen-II model, is it running the latest firmware? Because those two things are needed for it to be set up in half-bridge mode, which is where the modem just connects to the Internet and then passes everything to the router for it to handle.

Are these similar to the settings in your modem's configuration:

PVC: Pvc0
VPI: 0
VCI: 100
Virtual circuit: Enabled

Wan Setting: Half-Bride Mode

User Name: xxxxxxxxx@vodafone.co.nz (or whatever goes in here)
Password: *******

Authentication Type: Auto
Connection Type: PPPoA LLC
MTU: 1400
MRU: 1492
Default Route: Enabled
PPPoE Pass Through: Disabled
NAT: Disabled
Firewall: Enabled
IP Control: Dyanamic IP
Static IP: 0.0.0.0

Connection Setting

Always On is checked

ATM

Service Category: UBR

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a time capsule ( I said AE because I thought the have the same functions it terms of wifi)

I want the TC to handle everything so I can use guest networking and btmm, currently the TC is set to bridged mode and is working but limited is functions.

Mines is the first gen, firmware v3.00b02.NZ.20060710

Is it possible for half bridge to work on this, because there is no option in wan settings.

I can only find firmware for gen ii, will this work?

No worries, the configuration for AE and TC is the same just wasn't sure what product you had.

My understanding is that half-bridge mode only works on a Gen-II model, I doubt the firmware you've found would work on your device.

I used to have a 502T and to be honest they are crap. If you're after a basic modem get a Dynalink RTA1320E. It's what I have, they support half-bridge mode, and I found my speeds were better after switching to Dynalink a while back. I bought a brand new one recently from Trade Me for $10 so that would be the best place to look.

If you get one of those I'll help to set up for you as it's not 100% obvious how to set it up in half bridge mode, otherwise I think for the moment you might be stuck with the setup you have now with the TC in bridge mode.

Thanks, I tried upgrading the fw but screwed it, luckily had another one lying around.

I think I might take your advise and go with the dynalink. Are you currently using your TC with it, can you use all of the features of the TC

Does the dynalink support all of vodafones new red network stuff- adsl2+? Etc...

Yes, all features of the TC work and it's responsible for distributing the IP addresses of all my stuff (wired and wireless) and it works really well in bridge mode - all it does is receive the WAN IP from the modem and the TC takes care of the rest.

I'm with Telecom but you won't have any issues using the Dynalink on Vodafone, supports ADSL2+. Just make sure you go for the black RTA1320E version, its been redesigned from the 1320 to help with heat dissipation but still has the same chip in it as the previous version.

Either PM me or reply on here when you get one and I'll tell you the settings you need for half-bridge mode to work, will only take a few minutes and you'll be away laughing afterwards.

cheers corksta.

Just ordered an RTA1320E from a supplier, hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow or monday, are you able to PM the instructions? or should I wait till it arrives.

No worries mate I'll PM the instructions to you later on. I'm assuming you'll only need the instructions for the modem, you're sweet with setting up the TC?

Just about to PM you, but when it's in half-bridge mode, on the TC you'll want to choose 'Share a public IP address' under Internet>Internet Connection.
