Just a heads up... I had an interesting update from TelstraClear's project manager on new plans last night.

If all go well we might have a 100Mbps down/10Mbps up DOCSIS3 cable modem installed here at home for testing from next week.

As discussed here plans updates are being rolled out from October, with new plans for the DOCSIS3 service being rolled out later in the year.

Really looking forward to testing this... Have been a TelstraClear customer for many years, since the Chello service was first rolled out in Wellington, before Saturn came into play.

What would your monthly allowance be?
100GB? You could use that all up in maybe 3 hours.

Now, now. I have no idea of plans for the 100Mbps service, so anything YOU say is wild speculation.

I am already on the 25Mbps 120GB plan, and I don't think TelstraClear would offer the 100Mbps plan with a low cap like you folks are implying.

WTF more like 3mins!!! that speed nice, but i would like to better data caps then speeds....

100Mbps = around 10MB per second,

therefore 1GB will take 2.77 minutes
100GB 2.77 hours.

Please correct me if I am wrong, it is still early for today.

I think you are missing the other side of the equation... How do you know the server on the other side, providing the content you want can sustain that speed?

I am on a 120GB plan at 25Mbps but really use about 100GB a month max... That is with work from home, iTunes, online backups, etc...

lol yea that is true, so what sort of people would want this kind of connection? apart from alot of torrent freaks?

I would look at it for the upload capacity. Price dependant.

I would rather have a cable link of 25Mb down/ 25Mb up.

Still early for me too.

assuming 10MB/s is correct, and, 1GB = 1000MB,

would it take 100s to download 1000MB,
therefore 100/60 = 1.66minutes ~ 1minute 40s. / GB

Actually, Saturn predates Chello. Saturn did its first cable modem trials in 1997, but it only ever wholesaled the service until it finally bought one of the ISPs it wholesaled to (Paradise) on 1 April 2000. Chello launched 28 May 2000 --- and shut up shop on 7 September 2000.

I'd be interested to know how the traffic routes.

How much stuff goes to Sydney and back to get to an ISP across the street?

I was a Saturn cable customer in Kapiti from 1998 through to about 2004 (By which time I think it was Telstra-Clear). It was an awesome service at the time. 2mbps down and 256kbps up and national traffic was free. I loved it.

But I hear Telstra later tried to make other ISPs pay for interconnection (like in OZ) and if they didn't pay (or weren't Telecom) their traffic got sent to LA or Sydney and had to find its way back. AT&T in the US was doing the same kind of thing at about the same time....and in the NZ context it was very much at odds with the prevailing Kiwi Internet ethic (embodied in APE and the equivalent in Wellington) of everyone connecting to everyone for free and all share the benefit of that.

Does Telstra still send traffic destined for other locals overseas first?

Tele workers that do more then simple text documents . That kind of connection is about good enough to work with graphics files or large databases over the network, vnc into remote machines to work on and video conference with a room full of people.

When I had crazy fast internet at work it was great for within NZ, but as soon as you browsed international I was throttled to about the same as I could get from home.

lets hope this new undersea cable gets up and running fast to offer some competition.
