i've been calling my iphone 4 the sometimes phone. 3g internet that is.

when i first got it only had 2g. (12pm yesterday) my friend sitting right next to me with his vstick was surfing away laughing.

then 15 mins later suddenly worked. then stopped. then 15 mins later suddenly worked. got about 40kBps right thru till this am decided to update to OSi 4.1 to get HDR photos ...

wife used it fine. then (0800) ... with 3 bars of 3g there is no internet. waited till now - still zulch despite the bars.

question:

Hmm reset network settings suggested by a thread worked. Must be to do with phone not selecting 3G extended before,. It BETTER stay that way

There are several known issues with iPhones taking a long time to transition between networks (2G/3G)... Something to do with the way thier chipset scans I believe.

No use to you but XT works well around Timaru!
On a serious note, your 3G will be coming from either the 2100MHz tower on the corner of Hassall St and SH1; or 3G extended on 900MHz from the railway yards tower. Your 2G probably comes from across Saltwater Creek at the Pareora site.
If you get Layar AR Browser and load Jonathan Hall's NZ Cell tower layer. You could surmise like I am too...
