Hi everyone,

I have just joined up to xnet fusion and am trying to work out the best hardware to use. I'm new to VOIP and so don't have much of a clue (sorry!).

I currently have a Linksys WAG200G wireless modem/router which is quite a few years old and therefore I guess doesn't support VOIP (and so I can't just get an ATA)?

Therefore if I need to buy a new unit I would much prefer to get an all-in-one, including wireless access which is a must.

The linksys SRP527 seems to be the newest, but is very expensive at $370. I have found a WAG310G for $250 which is more affordable, but there seems to be people who have issues with these.

What would you guys suggest?

Thanks,
George.

How about a Linksys AG300 or AG310?

It is a modem / router and has a single port built in. No Wifi but you could set up the old WAG as a wireless router.

I don't have one of these so can't comment on the quality but the AG310 is on World Exchanges supported hardware list.

Cheers,

Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I've used both the AG310 and WAG310G, and both have been fine, although i haven't used the wireless side of the WAG310G.

From an ease of use and configuration if you are new, then an all in one unit like these are a good choice.

The advantages of having a seperate modem / router / ATA setup is there is more scope for flexibility and configuration (but obviously more complex too), and you can pick and choose whatever is best for you. From a reliabilty standpoint, the less electronics in each box, the cooler they run as well.

You can generally run a seperate ATA behind most ADSL modems quite succesfully, even if they do not specifically support VOIP or QOS - the downside is it can sometimes be fiddly to get it going first time...

If you are new to networking and VOIP though, I'd suggest one of the all in one units (AG310 / WAG310G or SRP527) would be easiest.

If you go for a seperate ATA, the SPA2102 is a better choice than the PAP2T - it supports better voice codecs, and faxing.

I should have added that the AG310 is not available new - you may pick one up 2nd hand for $80 - $100 or thereabouts. WAG310G is pretty thin on the ground new, but again, they pop up 2nd hand from time to time.
