Hi

I received an unsolicited automatic phone call that said it was a Casino and that I had won some money. I needed to press certain numbers on my phone to collect.. I hung up of course..

I am unfamiliar with this..

What was their goal?

Were they trying to hack my connection..?

Thank  you...

You should have pressed those numbers and see if you win anything. No?

I hung up pretty quick. I seem to remember some hack where you try to get people to press numbers on their phone..

Complain to your Phone Provider and they will be able to trace it down to who send them the call and those people can trace it back.. (and so on)..

I presume you didn't get the caller id (normally they are not valid for these types of calls or via skype sometimes I've found)

9 is used on some PABX to select an external line.
They where trying to hijack you phone to make free calls.

From the ministry of consumer affairs website http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scams/protect-yourself/protect-your-phone

"Be wary about responding to unsolicited calls, texts or faxes. They may direct you to disguised 0900 numbers or similar and it may cost you to reply."

I had a couple of automated calls recently someone with an american accent, I just hung up after 2 seconds!

Couldve been harvesting numbers for telemarketing - if you press 9 they can verify its a live number, thus they can build a list of live numbers for telemarketers to call.

Doesnt really make any sense, just a possible explanation

I've also had an experience with an automated dialer recently.
I just hung up. :P
