Vodafone launches first NZ ‘Blacklist’ service

Vodafone have announced the first Blacklist service in New Zealand will launch on 8 November, giving Vodafone customers the power to control who they receive TXT/PXT from.

The FREE service, aimed at young people and adults alike, is now available by TXTing ‘Blacklist Add [mobile number]’ to 713 on your Vodafone mobile.

When you Blacklist a number, it will prevent any further TXT/PXTs coming through from that number to your phone. This includes TXT/PXTs from any other network.

Vodafone’s contact centre receives 6,000 calls a year regarding TXT bullying and recognised a need to give customers the freedom to choose who they can be contacted by. The new Vodafone Blacklist service will act as a first line of defence.

Vodafone’s General Manager of Consumer Marketing, Kursten Shalfoon, says “This is one of several initiatives we’ve taken a leadership position on as part of our commitment to encourage our customers to use their mobiles responsibly. We’re proud to be the first in New Zealand to offer this service and we’ve made it free so that all our customers can access Vodafone Blacklist when and if they need to.”

This is the first phase in a plan to give Vodafone customers more control around who can contact them. Shalfoon adds that “a second phase of increased controls for parents will be launched in early 2011.”

Vodafone has also been working closely with Parents Inc. to develop a nationwide programme for New Zealand Secondary School students around technology which will be presented as part of their Attitude programme.

Connected aims to educate young New Zealanders on how to use technology in a way that’s healthy and positive.

Parents Inc. CEO, Bruce Pilbrow, says “Technology is an absolutely fantastic thing, if used properly. We believe that when you provide kids with the necessary education around technology, they can use it to learn, play and explore in a way that’s very healthy and beneficial.”

The Connected programme will be presented in 89% of high schools from early 2011. It offers young Kiwis hot tips on how to stay safe when building relationships online and how to handle TXT/cyber bullying.

Depends on their FAQ...

10) What type of numbers can not be blacklisted by Vodafone Blacklist?

* In-bound messages sent by Vodafone short codes eg 777.
* In-bound messages sent by the LocalZone short code(s)
* In-bound messages sent by emergency services & Civil Defence
* In-bound messages sent by other ?qualifying? sender numbers (as defined by Vodafone)

This is a very interesting service, and I hope other telcos follow suit. My daughter is currently on Vodafone, but we were looking to move her to 2Degrees (along with the rest of the family, eventually). As she will be starting high school soon, this makes the move not as cut and dry as it had originally appeared to be. I would like to think she will never need to utilize such a service, but kids these days... <pulls out his "old man" shaking stick>

Would be handy if you could block calls too.

Most phones can already blacklist numbers from within the settings menu. Callers that are blacklisted will hear an invalid number dial tone when trying to dial, (instead of a ring ring tone)

ERICSSON AND TELSIS ENABLE VODAFONE NZ TO HELP STOP TXT BULLIES

Ericsson and Telsis have partnered to deliver an enhanced Short Messaging Service (SMS) that will enable Vodafone New Zealand to protect their customers from text bullying.

Vodafone’s Blacklist is a free SMS service that enables customers to control who contacts them, with the ability to block both unwanted SMS and MMS messages. It works by allowing a customer to stop messages getting through to their mobile device.  If the customer receives an abusive or bullying text, they just send an SMS message to a Vodafone shortcode requesting the offending number to be blacklisted.  The request is actioned automatically and immediately.

“Cyberbullying, and in particular text bullying, is a serious issue for our society. In a global first, Ericsson and Telsis have developed an innovative solution that enables Vodafone NZ users to have full control over their SMS service, thereby protecting themselves or family members,” said Jeff Travers, Managing Director, Ericsson New Zealand.

“Our solution also includes the latest architecture for the SMS router, delivering a higher throughput capacity that enables Vodafone to easily expand its SMS service for customers in the future, without the need for additional hardware,” said Mr Travers.

Vodafone New Zealand selected Ericsson and Telsis in 2005 to provide their SMS Routing platform as the foundation for its messaging network. The flexibility of the platform has enabled Vodafone to handle on-going organic growth in SMS volumes as well as seasonal peaks in demand. It now positions the operator to deploy advanced and innovative messaging services without the cost and disruption of major network changes.

Telsis marketing director Richard Webb says, “In deploying SMS Blacklist, Vodafone New Zealand has led the way by showing that network operators are uniquely placed in their ability to provide protection against text bullying”.

Vodafone’s General Manager of Consumer Marketing, Kursten Shalfoon, says, “This is one of several initiatives we’ve taken a leadership position on as part of our commitment to encourage our customers to use their mobiles responsibly. We’re proud to be the first in New Zealand to offer this service and we’ve made it free so that all our customers can access Vodafone Blacklist when and if they need to.”

“Ericsson and Telsis have combined to provide us with a powerful and flexible platform that will enable us to offer our customers a range of valuable and exciting new services,” Mr Shalfoon says.

As part of the project, Ericsson provided local professional services and support services while Telsis provided the solution and delivery resources

call barring is for calls only I think. I don't think it can block text messages.

Did you just do a Mrs Palmer joke? lol.

On a more serious note, would this explain the SMS issues that Vodafone have been having? It's good to finally see this service.
