I know that TCL will only allow their modem to be used but I also know that some people have asked them to upgrade their modem to a more "modern" one. For example I have a SB4100 by Motorola and I know people who have been able to upgrade to a SB5100 which is even faster. Anyone know how this works?

The type of modem makes no difference at all to your service, the only real difference was between the old Com21 modems and the Surfboards - off the top of my head the Com21's should have a marginally higher ping time.
