Anyone had any experience with this?  After 45 minutes on and off hold to someone that had no idea what they were doing i was told it would cost $70.00 and take 10 business days as a whole new sim would have to be sent? Surely you don't have to send a whole new sim and charge $70?

You're luck to get that far with Telstra. Just port it to 2 Degrees, it's online and really easy.

nope - it should be an easy process....

2Degree and Telecom take about 4-48 hours turn around.

oh boy I had major headaches with this.  I signed up for telstraclear's new mobile plan and asked if I could port my Vodafone number at a later stage.  The operator said yes and I twice asked that this wouldn't cost or be a problem to which they said no cost, no probs.  Weeell, 3 weeks later I tried to port my number and that then started a 3 month ordeal in which I had to call numerous times, got told I couldn't port, then it would cost ($70 I think), then told no problem with porting, and round and round.  Finally got my number ported after much arguements with no cost although they made it sound like they were giving me great customer service by "waiving" the fee.  They did need to send me a new sim card with the ported number - I asked them why when 2degrees could do it over the phone and the telstra person I was talking to at the time said "they didn't understand how 2degrees did that"!  Jeez aren't these guys a major telecommunications company!
Of course now I'm being charged for a 2nd mobile account as they've forgotten to cancel the initial sim card.  Back to being on hold with their call centre....
