Any ideas on what we could expect speed/price wise, and would this likely kill Woosh ?

The idea of using a 3g datacard everywhere feels appealing

There are some insightful post in this thread regarding this subject.

I'd say when Vodafone offer this service, woosh is going to hard pressed.

I have both Woosh and Vodaphone 3G, I recommend to stay tag with Woosh if you use internet regularly. My monthly fee on Woosh  is $49.95 3GB limit and $59 120MB limit. On Woosh if I go over my limit, the speed will be reduce to 64Mbs (same as dialup), no charge. On Vodafone, if I go over the limit - no speed reduction but $1/1MB Using Woosh PCMCIA card $99, the lightest plan of Vodaphone $199, now it is free if you go for other plan. But some outlet still charge you $499 for 3G PCMCIA card.

Good thing about 3G is that you can use it in anywhere in Christchurch, but Woosh is only in certain places.

There's no denying that Vodafone's current 3G data rates are hugely more expensive than broadband plans on Woosh or ADSL, but the original poster was making a reference to the fact that Vodafone is likely to launch a product at some stage this year that will be a feasible competitor to 'mainstream' broadband connections. It probably wouldn't be able to achieve the same speeds as ADSL, but it would still be fantastic for people like me who value convenience and portability over connection speed.

Let's wait four days... I've heard a rumour today, but can't confirm or deny because of the lack of substance on the information.

My Woosh contract doesn't expire until October so it doesn't really matter to me if Vodafone take a few months to get this product to market, but it's still exciting to know that there may be some developments in the pipeline. I guess that if Vodafone manages to do something that ends up killing off Woosh, then the expiry date of my contract with Woosh becomes irrelevant!

I'm pretty sure that Vodafone would wait to launch HSDPA before trying to compete with existing mainstream broadband services, though. The speed of the existing 3G network would probably be sufficient for many users, but the stigma of being an inferior service may stick around long after the HSDPA upgrade is complete. Woosh have certainly proved that mud sticks in this industry.

Dont expect too much of the HSDPA in the beginning. The more user the less capacity it has.
Whoosh has an advantage of the fixed subscribers, but HSDPA will be definitely much faster.
However if many user will be in the same cell then HSDPA bandwidth will be reduced to each user and the available speed can be below Woosh.

Anyway in my opinion also that later on it will be a Woosh killer, if they dont increase their speed above 1Mb.

WHAT WHAT ...

I just spend heaps on getting my new PPC IMATE JAS JAR (WM5) , with 3G what ever the speed is now.

Will I be able to get the new speeds from vodafone 3G broadband ?

Will I be holding an out of date product in a couple of weeks ?

Please advise ....Lucky I took a monthly plan, and not a 2 year contract.

Calm down, Digs... There's no date set for the roll out of a new service from Vodafone New Zealand, yet. And these things don't happen from one day to another.

Your device will not get those speeds, but no device in the market now will get it anyway. You have to buy what solves your problem now, not the problem you will have in 12 months - and  hardly "not having HSDPA" is a problem.

The High Sped Download Packet Access is an evolution of the current 3G network. Currently in tests, not far away, but not to close...

Until Vodafone gets the full HSPA (HSDPA + HSUPA), I won't be dancing a jig... up to 1Mbit/s download speed is a nice improvement on the present 384k, but if you don't get a corresponsing increase from the current 64k upload speed, I don't see that it'll be worth my while to get a new handset/data card. HSUPA is on its way though, but it may take until 2007 apparently - and, will it require a yet another new device purchase?

More info on what Voda's rolling out on Nokia's site .
