Hi there
We recently switched to tcl following telecoms pr disaster when the marketing gurus stopped the big time plan with very poor tactics. this was on top of stopping the go large  which was equally disastrous
however we were enjoying 13 mbps consistently with Telecom- day and night. herne bay address.Ponsonby exchange
Wireless modem

Now we are with TCL we get under 2 mbps in the evening if we are lucky. The only time we get 13 mbps is at 6 am in the morning !
Dlink modem.

The street we are in means TCL use Telecom's lines to deliver the broadband . Could be the issue

We can hardly use the internet at night esp if watching video .TCL have been quite helpful in trying to sort this out , new reuter options, trace reuts included. "nothing wrong there " we are told
however we still get this throttling back

Is it Telecom doing it to all customers or are they perhaps pinging back other telco's clients ?
Are Auckland central broadband customers getting throttled back across the board ?

Any one with similar experience please let us know. Very frustrating and not sure what to do next ...

My xt mobile stick gets 7 mbps from home - pity we cant get a better plan for that

Cheers for any help

TCL probably doesn't buy as much backhaul as what Telecom can give to their own ISP. ;)

2Mbit/s in the evening to where.. do national and international perform roughly the same or is national fast and international slow?

the 2mbps is the same international or national- basically cant watch video an don occassion it drops below 1.2 which is intolerable
my question is telecom speeds were consistently 13 mbps, the street is cabinetised and adsl2+
congetsion ?
why was telecom not congested then

something very wrong that we switch provider and the speed drops like a stone

may need to bite the bullet and return to telecom ?

Q1:  What modem/router do you have? Can you login to the admin ui and post the line stats (eg: line rate, noise margin, line attenuation etc).

Q2:  What exchange/cabinet are you on?  Check here http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

ADSL is basically delivered like this:

Your line > Cabinet/Exchange > Shared backhaul network > Handover point/link to ISP > ISP Network > ISP international/national transit.

This problem sounds like ISP handover link congestion (which seems to be increasingly common).

As I said before, it's because telecom gets craploads more backhaul than what other ISPs can afford/buy.
So basically, telecom is faster because they're telecom and other isps are slower because they don't have their own backhaul, they rent it from telecom. Telecom can make more money by stopping ISPs from having more backhaul, etc.

thanks everyone
reckon its easier to go back to telecom- and hopefully we will have normality
understand the back haul angle- will make a hard road for otheer telco's in auckland

a friend is on orcon 3 streets away and gets 20 mbps on orcon
he must be near the cabinet or maybe orcon have done something different and better
thanks again geek zoners
cheers

Actually since regulation and separation Telecom Retail use the same Telecom wholesale
services that are available to other ISP's (UBA, UBA Backhaul, Handover links).

You can read about the regulated services on the Telecom wholesale site.

Telecom Retail is less congested that other ISP's because:

a: It has more mom and pop low usage users to balance out heavier users
b: They handover from Telecom wholesale in more locations than other ISP's. The other ISP's often only do handover at 1 or 2 locations nationwide.

Telecom is no angel but blame Telecom for everything is getting old.

They have been forced to sell wholesale access to their nationwide network by government regulation, this has meant other ISP's can kick back and not build competing fibre networks. Telsraclear not expanding the cable network is a classic example.

Orcon have installed their own gear in some exchanges (typically the large profitable ones only) and use a different provider of their choice for backhaul to their core network (FX Networks or Vector).

Oh sure, they've been "forced to". Do you seriously think there isn't some kind of "you rub my back i'll rub yours" technical stuff going on behind the scene?

In the end, even if there isn't some kind of in the back room "cisco i'll type this isn't of that" deal going on, people on telecom will get better speeds than !telecom ISp..

Also have you asked the question: If ISP's aren't happy with the services that Telecom Wholesale has been forced to offer by the Commerce Commission.. why aren't they building more of their own networks, own fibre and own ADSL equipment.. rather than cherry picking and only installing gear in the largest and most profitable exchanges and riding Telecom's investment?

Because it's expensive and they cherry pick them so they can get a higher return/not lose any money on unprofitable exchanges?

Oh. I see.

Yet Telecom is by law required to provide service to everyone.

Look I agree backhaul and handover link ratios are too low now, the cabinetisation program has increased a lot of peoples line rates upwards a lot and the matching changes to handover link dimensioning appears to be lagging behind.

Many people on the medium size ISP's that have lots of heavy users are seeing big congestion problems.

However it's both Telecom's, the commerce commission and the other ISP's that need to do better.

Nothing much is going to happen now though with private investment largely on hold due to the FTTH project the government is working on.
