I got this letter too, I'm in waltham Christchurch, where abouts are you? Is this truly a local outage as they suggest?

Could be something to do with the current slow problems which are currently occuring.

Yeah Chch here. Hopefully its just "up to 4 hours' - more the worry it is longer or something breaks. I have taken the day off work for the expansion too. Us wow junkies need our Cataclysm fix :D

From Telstras website....

Christchurch - Planned Maintenance - Cable TV/Modems- 07/12/10 00:01 - 10/12/10 06:00

Planned maintenance on the TelstraClear network is due to take place on 07/12/10 between 00:01 and 10/12/10 06:00 This will affect Cable TV/Modems in Christchurch
Loss of Cable TV/Modems service - Rolling outages - each node will have an outage of less than 3 mins

Are these the same outage or two different ones ?

Just in from another forum. Big thanks TCL

----------------------------
We're doing firmware upgrades on the entire cable network and only just found out that they clash with the Cataclysm release date... We're pushing the upgrades back 24hrs so y'all can play without us taking out your net feeds for 20mins in the middle

Feel free to let the WoW community in general know that if they have a cable feed they can expect about a ~20min outage on Thursday morning sometime between 1am and 5am..... Hopefully that'll be the last mass upgrade for awhile (stupid buggy cisco code!)

If you could also let them know we're specifically pushing the work back 24hrs so they can get they're cataclysm fix on day of release that'd be cool too

This is happening in Wellington as well, so it's probably their entire cable network.

I suppose it could be worse. Still, it would have been good if it had timed with the weekly WoW server maintenance.

Regardless, my collector's edition should be waiting for me at the local Gamesman/EB branch.

It's good that they pushed it back so 0.01% of their customers won't get upset about not being able to play a game, but timing the outage with another event in the gaming world? That's asking a bit much. Honestly any day between 2am and 6am very very few people would care if the internet stopped working for 3 minutes.

I think your numbers at 0.01% are a little out but hey :)

"Since debuting in North America, Australia, and New Zealand on November 23, 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular subscription-based MMORPG around the world. It was the bestselling PC game of 2005 and 2006 worldwide, and finished behind only World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade?, the first expansion pack for the game, in 2007. For 2008, the World of Warcraft series represented three of the top five bestselling PC games, with Wrath of the Lich King finishing the year at #1, and in 2009, World of Warcraft titles claimed three of the top six spots.*"

Add to that currently

Amazon.com top selling game
Mighty Ape NZ top selling game

Anyway this fan is stoked that Telstra made a small change to allow for the large base that play overnight when there is an expansion. In my guild alone I can account for quite a few TCL customers who would have been affected.

The problem is not the outage itself it is the chance (as has happened in the past) that all modems dont re-authenticate after. That can lead potentially to long outages.

I don't think many people are gamers, especially the online games. I've never even tried one, and I don't know anyone who has. Nice of TC to move the upgrade though.
