I've discovered today a disturbing drop in call quality on my VFX line.  In the past, it's been a bit sketchy when talking and downloading at the same time, but I'm having problems even when all computers are switched off, and all wifi devices are disconnected.

What it's doing is when you make a call, the ringing tone is "wobbly", rather than a clear, solid sound.  And when the call connects, the other person's voice is similarly quavery, and sometimes slows down.  The other person can sometimes hear me, sometimes not, and I think my voice is delayed, but it's hard to be sure.

Equipment wise, I'm using the Linksys WAG54GP2v2, a run-of-the-mill cordless phone connected to the router.  I've tested it with a corded phone, and it's the same problem, which would rule out the phone itself.  I'm not sure which firmware version it's running, though I've had it about 3-years and don't recall ever updating the firmware.

Has anyone heard of these kinds of problems, and is there a simple fix?  If it's modem/router related, I've been thinking of replacing it for a wireless-n device - is there such a thing with the ATA for VFX, or would I need to get a modem with ATA, and a router with wireless-n?

Cheers

Are you running anything else at the same time? Bittorrents? Do you have QoS set on your router?

I have heard anecdotally of some of the WAG54GP2v2 units dying with voice quality problems. This may or may not be your problem - easiest way to test it is grab another modem to try, if you have one available...

Sounds pretty much like the router is dying on the POTS line, if both the ringing and call quality sounds like you describe it would seem it could be the actual pots port, we can change the line to the second line on the device and see how we go

Run some internet speedtests & check the router sync speeds to check you connection is not the issue.

How do I change the line to the second line on the device?  Is this something I need to ring you guys to arrange, or is it just a hardware change?

Ring the Xnet helpdesk, and they will do it at their end. You can then plug your phone in to line 2 instead of 1.

Sorry should have pointed that out, but yes you need to ring in the help desk, we will change the config to enable the 2nd pots line and you will just replug the cable into the second line on the router.

Well the phone line has now been switched from line 1 to line 2 on the modem, and so far everything is fine. Mind you, just before the switch over happened, I noticed that that line 1 was working alright, with none of the described symptoms. So whether the fault has been resolved, or whether it was something else intermittent, I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Hi Lizard,

Your not by chance in the Awapuni area in PNorth? We had issues at that same time period with unusable phone line and really bad download speeds.

Was like that for couple of days and then came right.

Cheers,
