Hi all
Just saw this at a clients office today in Napier.
They told me a year ago they were getting some sort of wireless service from Telstra Clear -
i didnt believe them until I saw this.

This appears to be a power over ethernet injector for a roof mounted radio reciever.

Anyone got any info on their radio network? Pricing or coverage?
I didnt see anything on their website.

I've seen it working in Palmerston North and Rotorua. Wasn't that impressive, I think about 2Mbit. The two sites that were on it have since moved to DSL - lower cost and faster speeds.

Not sure about the technical details or coverage sorry.

That looks like an Alvarion PoE injector, Used in their licensed and unlicensed Wimax gear. I can't recall ever seeing that PoE outside of Wimax use.

If it is the speed will be limited but it will be rock solid, Their mBST can push 12mbit total on 3.5mhz channel sizing and the CPE is a bit costly, Alot of the offering's I've seen using their gear have been Business's with a high install cost and lower speeds aimed at either high channel usage VoIP connections or low bandwidth mission critical links as either primary or backup connections.

It's nice gear thats built very well

Is the service hidden somewhere on their website?

I have always seen what looks like an AP tower in Napier on Prebensen Drive and wondered what it was for. It happens to be about 100m away from this clients office too. Kinda thought it would be the local wisp Airnet as they would be too cheap to build something like it or use alvarion. Also appears that it is not on the RSM website as a licenced transmitter.

Yes, you are correct.  TCL uses Wimax as an access method to delever business services.  As the Wimax is used as an access method and not a service, you will not see it offered as a service.

It used to be called Tempest, I think? Only sold to Clear business customers, from memory.

That is the same PoE injector we have with our Wimax connection in Wellington with NZwireless (up to 5mbps). Telstra have a pretty large wireless network AFAIK.

On our building in Auckland in Penrose they have a heap of wireless equipment on the roof. Made ti really easy for us to get an internet connection as we just needed to drop down cat5e from their switch 5 floors :)

Your thinking of SSR (spread spectrum radio) access method which used to be used to deliver 'Tempest' business Internet, which is a legacy service, no longer offered. Wimax is a newer radio system used to deliver current business services.

Ray

TCL runs Alvarion WIMAX (802.16d) in Napier, Nelson, Rotorua, Dunedin and Auckland in the CBD areas... these were put up around 2003 originally after the first non-LLU decision by the Labour govt. They initially ran the tempest plans, but now run BizBroadband plans (http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/business/products/internet/bizbroadband/index.cfm). Private IP data tails have also been supplied with them (IP or Frame Relay Emulation if really required).

The technology is finicky, and many building owners refuse to let external aerials be mounted on the roof, which is a shame. The indoor antenna's are REALLY picky about antenna positioning, which means by the time you finish with an installation a shedload of money and time has been sunk, usually for not much return. The speed is OK, but is being superseded by govt events and LLU.
